What deserves to be Remastered on CD?
Yeah, I suppose I could pick up some good vinyl - but I don't have a good turntable. In fact, it's an old Craig that I got in Jr. High. You know, the kind with a tuner and built-in 8 track player. Since I have a pretty good digital front-end AND t...
Ear Candy: Most startling recordings.
Anything by Enigma! Also, for synthesized is Moodswings. Best ear candy of the classic rock days is the Moody Blues - hand's down. Of course, Pink Floyd is great too! Tony
Tired of same ol' CD'd...
For Irish/Celtic, there's some great CD's like "Ceredwen: Legends of the Celts". Also, check out Clannad, The Chieftons, Enya, and The Pogues (great drinkin' music). There's also some really good "traditional/modern" Japanese music out there - don...
What deserves to be Remastered on CD?
Sam, I agree with a lot of the points you make. However, most of the "alternative" rock music has been recorded in the 90's. It also seems that a healthy portion of 60's music was remastered at the "dawn" of the digital age and hasn't been remaste...
Upsampling DACS: Take the Pepsi Challenge
Just read Kevin's article at the Muse site. I think it caps this discussion nicely. Check it out: http://www.museelectronics.com/download.html
Buyer's remorse - your worst purchase?
Lexicon CP2. The MOST sterile sounding processor/pre out there. Not only that, it spent more time in the repair shop than in my rack.
Best Recording Label
Don't know if these qualify a "true" labels but I've had good luck with Mobile Fidelity, Audioquest, and Denon. I've got a Japanese Denon label version of Enya's Watermark that is far superior to the US release. As far as "true" record labels go, ...
Does room size affect volume and bass?
Onhwy69 - I think the dealer's room was bigger which would make him correct. I also agree that a larger amp would be necessary in the dealer's room - esp. if 90db is the norm for equipment auditions! Wow - don't want to buy floor model speakers fr...
Upsampling DACS: Take the Pepsi Challenge
Pheew! Anyway...One thing that does seem to be true is this: We all don't have engineering degrees, myself included, and that goes for the audio mag reviewers as well! If there is a "silver lining" to all this, it would be that the information lea...
Up & Over Sampling... Continued
Jordan and Craig, thanks for your postings. You guys are great for sharing this information! Jeff Kalt's e-mail really helped "fill in the gaps" and I think I see where I was off in my earlier posting. Thanks again. -Tony
Up & Over Sampling... Continued
Hi Greysquirrel, I hear you loud and clear about the analog output section. I guess I was espousing my thoughts about what I was interpreting from Halverson's e-mail. I definately agree that there is much more than number crunching going on, hence...
Up & Over Sampling... Continued
I don't want to sound ignorant about this because I feel I have a fair idea, conceptually, of how the digital process works. Let me quickly say that Garfish and others who spent their time researching this should be commended. Thank you for your e...
Bi-Amplification advice
Hi. I am currently bi-amping my system and have done so for the past several years. Bi-amping the easy and cheap way is to have a stereo amplifier power one speaker. Get a high quality Y-adaptor with the one male end connecting with either the lef...
Invisible Speakers
Lightspeed, let me make a suggestion I think you both can live with. If you are having a cabinet built to house your speakers, extend the width of the cabinet to also house the speakers. There are many "accoustically (sp?) transparant cloths that ...
Help with Buzzing in Speakers
It does sound like a thermal problem. Try putting the processor on tip toes and don't put anything on top of it. The tip toes will not only provide improved stability but will allow for better air circulation around the unit. I use these on my amp...
