The plight of SACD....
My 2 cents:1) CDs sound fine if done right, that means a player in the 2k+ range.2) Vinyl sounds better only when the pops, clicks and scratches are absent, which is about 50% of the time, and you can't play them in your car!3) Corporate greed wil...
help with harshness / brightness - cary 303-100
I too thought the Cary and several others sounded bright. Try a Linn Ikemi, very smooth, especially with acoustic music.
CD Player buying decisions
I totally agree on the original Planet. A great player for under $400.
Need help choosing new CD player
I have the same pre-amp and speakers as you and am very happy with the Linn Ikemi. Used ARC CD3s are also starting to show up that I bet would sound great with your gear, but you'd have to stretch your budget a bit.
CD v. SACD
Kayakfit... "redbook" cd refers to the standard cd that has been out for 20 years now. SACD (super audio compact disc) is Sony and Phillips attempt to hold on to the patent they have on digital recordings with cds that is expiring. DVD-A (digital ...
CD v. SACD
SACD is a gamble at this point. Sony is the only major record label supporting the format and they won't even supply a large enough inventory of sacds to justify the purchase. I have heard cds through the Sony 777 and Marantz SA-1 and was not impr...
Al Dimeola , Russ Freeman, Chick Corea...
No, I know the album your referring to. I've often considered getting it and now I think I will. The one I'm referring to was an Al D. with friends kind of thing and was terrific. It was with Russ Freeman, Chick Corea and either Larry Carlton or L...
Linn Ikemi CD Player vs. Other Lower Cost Options
I also recently auditioned several players before deciding on the Ikemi. If you are patient you may be able to find a used/demo unit close to your price. I was able to get a demo unit for $2200 and I notice that someone is asking $2900 on Audiogon...
Best sounding CD player for 6,000.
I second the Ikemi, which is considerably less than 6k, especially if you can find one used. It has a great sound and excellent build quality. The Metronome also sounds very nice.
Stereophile "confirms" Moncrieff's SACD comments ?
Just to add my 2 cents... at the 2002 HEC show in NYC, the Joseph Audio room used a Classe Omega SACD/CD player and you could not distinguish between cd and sacd. They both sounded great through Manley electronics and Joseph's Pearl speakers. Howe...
Jazz Recommendations
Miles Davis' "Kind of Blue" is the classic album that all jazz muscians acknowledge as one of the most important recording ever. Also, anything with Ray Brown.
Recommended female vocalists?
The xrcd version of Ella and Joe Pass, titled "Take Love Easy" is a must. You might also want to try some Tuck and Patti discs (Tuck Andress and Patti Cathcart), another great vocal/guitar duo. You might have to skip some of the more upbeat cuts, ...
Good one-box CDP or good DAC?
It really depends on the type of music you listen to and your personal preferences. I recently settled on a used Linn Ikemi for the price you mention. Fortunately, I was able to compare it on the same electronics to the Cary 303/200, Krell, and Ma...
Multichannel SACD, new category?
Time will tell regarding multichannel sacd (or dvd-a for that matter which still may ultimately prevail). But if the goal of high end audio is to reproduce a live performance, I have never witnessed one where the muscians, surrounded me. I also ca...
Upsampling the way to go? ?
This has been interesting reading, but no one has answered the question if they have heard a ARC CD3 compared to one of the upsamplers. To me the truth is still in the listening, not the stats.
