1st sound vs. placette? I have the Placette and find it nearly invisible, sonically. I have tried one other passive and three pre-amps in the last few years (including an $8,000.00 tube type) and find the Placette the most neutral and finest sounding. And the remote volu...
Buggtussel Speakers - heard 'em? Drubin - I thought maybe there was some brightness but the amp being used a big SS type with a silver faceplate, made by Buggtussel. However, I heard a couple records which sounded very good and no brightness at all. The speakers do use a metal do...
Strawbs Update The name sounds familiar but who are they and what songs did they do that were popular? When were they popular? I think I remember something from them during the 1970s.
Is VonSchweikert VR-1 good upgrade from Spica TC50 Not only isn't she the girl I married, I can't remember her name! I dated my wife right when I bought the Maggies (MG1Bs) and the first time she walked in my house and saw them, she said, "Oh, jeesh! What are those things?" I had to explain this i...
Best speakers under $650 Platinum Solos are a damn good speaker but you won't get dynamics or transparency without LOTS of power. I tried them 7-8 yrs ago with a 160wt Mesa Baron P/P tube amp -worked pretty good but I could tell they could handle even more. And I second t...
Is VonSchweikert VR-1 good upgrade from Spica TC50 I bought the first pair of TC50s which came into Michigan in 1983. Loved those little music makers! However, I got the itch one year later and bought Maggies, sold the Spicas. Bought another pair in 1986, sold 'em 2 yrs later. Still fantasize abou...
Amp Recommendations for Acoustat 1+1s I think you need lots of current for the 1 + 1s. I had a pair in the mid to late 1980s and loved them. I also used an Adcom 555 amp but also used a Janis W1 subwoofer - made a huge difference as this freed main amp from a lot of work. With a prope...
300B Tubes - Which is Best? Aren't the TJs a Sofia product? Aren't they one of their versions of s 300B?Also, I noticed Gjgoldy has Cary 805s. I'm still interested in anyone who has tried someone they like better than W.E.s as power tubes. Mine are still chugging along after...
Source for JVC XRCD I totally agree with the K2 reissues. XRCDs sound great and have great music but are way over priced. I go through the record bins looking for K2s and ignore the XRCDs.

Help I have not bought equipment since mid 80's Rockvirgo is right, in my experience. I have tried the stand mounted Veritas (I think 2.3) and liked it quite a lot but tried it with a Conrad-Johnson 60 watt amp. I think you may want to think about getting into tubes as most equipment is now ver...
Cary cares and now I care about Cary. I also had a problem, a severe one, with mono-blocks I bought from Cary. They too was out of warranty but I spoke w/ Dennis directly and he made sure things were taken care of although I did have to pay shipping. Since these things are hand made, ...
Dark and laid back vs bright and forward Okay, here goes! The above terms only apply to solid state amps regardless as to how "properly designed" they are. They are all some thing or the other or a combination throughout the frequency range. However, a truly properly designed tube amp wi...
Cars. What does the typical audiophile drive? 2003 Honda Accord special edition 6sp 240 HP Coupe. Has reworked suspension and steering. I will drive for one year and then have my local dealer tighten up suspension even more, and have them add a few more horses. Does 0-60 in 6.2 secs now, I'd ... |
