McIntosh -- good for show, not for sound, says dealer
I have always considered "Macs" to be the "Harley-Davidson" of audio, and anyone who knows "bikes" knows just what I mean. 😉
JBL L112
I have a pair of L112s that I got in ~'89 from the original owner, refoamed correctly once by OCS.  They sit in the family room and never get played.
Which Tweeter preferred- dome natural material, Beryllium/Metal or Planar Ribbon? Why?
I modified my AMTs to take the peak out of the high end (~10kHz) using a diffraction lens I designed/developed, and to boost the lower end by extending the flair.   I also remove the back wave because I don’t want the reflections, which can be u...
Which Tweeter preferred- dome natural material, Beryllium/Metal or Planar Ribbon? Why?
Which is why you need to INSTANTANEOUSLY A/B them with everything else being IDENTICAL as I allowed for.  Did you watch the videos?   Maybe a different tube amp would have a different outcome, but others on another forum also find this to be tru...
Which Tweeter preferred- dome natural material, Beryllium/Metal or Planar Ribbon? Why?
The ESS AMT will shine when played using a high current solid state amp, but they don't do nearly as well on tubes. In these videos, I went to extremes to match the volumes and the Vanessa track is within 0.1 dB while the SRV track is within 0.5 ...
Big Below 15k used that can play loud as heck
$15K???   I got you covered. Just come on by, pay me, and have your furniture movers bring it to you.   For $15K you would get a pair of one-off Super Reds most probably made by The Mastering Labs. These are 15.5 cubic feet with the Altec 604E...
House Wiring Does Make a Difference!
NOS Leviton 8300 from ebay ($~$6 each). I don’t know if the current 8300s are quite the same.   The recepticles are "back-fed"and there are two holes for each terminal (4 holes per side) with a jumper between the terminals. I used the deep boxes...
Do speaker wires have to be the same length for each speaker?
Sure..., and all of the wires inside of every piece of equipment must be the same length for both channels.   And, all "mirror image" parts in both channels must sit equidistant from the power supply.
Dedicated 20 Amp Line for Audio
Well we did it today. The run was 121’ of 8-gauge wire, with another 2 feet to run between the plugs. Seeing as how I had a 125 foot spool of wire, I cut it pretty close!   It is not easy, but not impossible to feed in and jumper the 8-gauge bet...
Dedicated 20 Amp Line for Audio
I installed a single 8-gauge, 20-amp line/breaker with the thought that if all of the equipment is on the same source, neutral, and ground, it should be less likely to hum or develop ground loops.   If one were to pull two lines from the two bus...
Dedicated 20 Amp Line for Audio
I am currently in the process of doing this wiring and in fact just today installed the 20 amp breaker in the panel and pulled and tacked the 8-gauge from the box up through the attic and to the wall where it will come down to the entertainment ce...
If a " system " cannot do this, I move on........
I have horns speakers (JBL L200/300s, JBL 4430s, Altec Super Reds) but I have found it better (smoother and more linear) to use cones and a Heil AMT. While a horn will supply more than enough volume at the seating area, it does so with much direc...
For SACD fans only
When you are ready to get rid of the Oppo, let me know what you want for it.Thanks
Get the best from your system while listening without any cost
What do you mean "without any cost?"If I turn off the inverter for my solar panels it costs the electricity that the panels would be producing. So, if costs me the flow of over 5kW of energy that I could be using to put me into a lower "price struc...
What do we hear when we change the direction of a wire?
The smallest step-change in amplitude that can be detected by ear is about 0.3dB for a pure tone. In more realistic situations it is 0.5 to 1.0dB'". This is about a 10% change. (Harris J.D.). At medium volume, the voltage amplitude at the output...
