Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC?
Raul,I have since discovered that the issue with bass tightness may have been related to pivot damping with the Phantom. With the Jubilee MC I used minimal damping - barely up to the bottom of the square shank - because the Jubilee could easily sou...
Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC?
I should have mentioned above that the P77 seems particularly good at capturing the decay of instruments. I think it's better at this than my Jubilee MC which, from memory, sounds quite a bit drier. Just finished listening to the Chick Corea/Gary ...
Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC?
Axel/Dgob,I'm not really finding the treble extension of the P77 to be deficient - though it does sound different to the Ortofon Jubilee.I've now checked/adjusted alignment with the MintLP (the Graham jig was very close, the slight overhang adjust...
Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC?
Axelwahl,Yeah - I raised the VTA up by around 5mm. Luckily I have plenty of adjustment range with the Phantom. I'm still playing around with the various setup parameters to ensure I'm getting the best from the P77.One thing I haven't got around to...
Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC?
Last week I finally got around to installing my old Garrott P77 MM cartridge into my TNT/Phantom 2 setup. I'd rescued the P77 from the old rack system turntable where I'd dumped it more than 15 yrs ago (having decided I'd be using MC's from then o...
Alignment tool for SME V + Shelter
Nsgarch, there is no need to try to 'sell' the SME-V's design to me - I owned that arm for two years myself back in 1989-91. In '91 I replaced it with the Graham 1.5T which I found sonically superior and allowed precise and repeatable adjustments ...
Alignment tool for SME V + Shelter
Nsgarch, you said:"I understand your point, although I think "several mm" variation may be an exaggeration, especially with today's cartridges."The two cartridges I use currently have a marked difference in the mounting position on my Graham arm. ...
Alignment tool for SME V + Shelter
Nsgarch, the SME sliding base will provide overhang adjustment - but the effective length of the arm is fixed depending on the stylus to mounting distance of the particular cartridge. The base moves the whole arm, it can't adjust the length. The st...
Alignment tool for SME V + Shelter
I use the Mint-LP and think it's a brilliant tool. It allows a precision of setup that I don't think the Feickert's more conventional grid alignment method could match. However, as you no doubt realise, the SME V cannot be adjusted for effective le...
Graham Phantom vs. Phantom II
Flyfish, like you I have owned the 1.5T for a long time (18yrs) but finally cracked and got a Phantom 2.I don't think you'll find the 'micropoise' level a waste of shipping. I find it a really handy feature - and yes, you wonder why no-one else ha...
Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC?
Lewm, you said:"There is a certain value of load resistance where the voltage output reaches a plateau, which would be different for every cartridge and would depend upon its internal resistance and probably other parameters."FWIW,100 ohm loading ...
Ortofon Windfeld - anyone heard one?
Axelwahl, I would have to agree that back then I didn't have a tool even remotely as accurate as the MintLp tractor I now use. Ditto for the phono stage. Tools I used back then would have been a paper tractor or the MFSL Geodisc - not exactly supe...
Ortofon Windfeld - anyone heard one?
Axelwahl, given the recent hype regarding MM carts, I'm going to retrieve my 20yo Garrott P77 from my folks house (when I get around to it) - to see what the cartridge sounds like in my current setup. To be honest I'm not overly optimistic that I'...
Ortofon Windfeld - anyone heard one?
Shane, there is a well written comparison between the Jubilee and the Windfeld on the Polk Audio forum: http://www.polkaudio.com/forums/showthread.php?t=68614 Makes me want to upgrade from my Jubilee!
Garrott P77 MM Cartridge
Hmmm.....I too bought a P77 from John Garrott somewhere around the late 80's early 90's. I'd moved on to other moving coils and so I mounted the p77 into my fathers plasti-deck rack system turntable....where I believe it still resides. Don't think...
