After Quad ESL's?
Hi, Aside from the Harbeths, Spendors are also considered as box speakers close to the Quads, esp. in the midrange (but most people move from Spendor to Quad, not the other way). Also the Spendors will work well with tube amps.TLH
Jazz-suited speakers for an Arcam amp?
Hi, My recommendation would be very different. Spendor or Harbeth. Neither will play as low as the speakers you mention, but both will have truer tonal accuracy and better low level resolution IMO. I've never heard any other speakers that do jazz ...
Spendor S3/5 standard vs “SE” version????
Hi, I've never heard the SE version, but I just bought another pair of the standard S3/5s and love them. To me, they are "just right" and aside from their LF limitations, one of the best speakers period. However, I pretty much like all the Spendor...
Cartridge recommendations for Michell Gyrodec SE
I used a Clearaudio Virtuoso, Goldring Elite and VDH MC10 with my Gyro, but I had an SME arm. All three cartridges had advantages/disadvantages. Overall, I would probably say to go with a MC, because the Gyro will have good dynamics, and the MCs w...
What's wrong with classical music on vinyl?
Hi, A number of people who are more qualified than me have offered some excellent suggestions. Setup/compatability of the cartridge in particular. I too have experienced the noise problems you mention with classical music, even with my former exce...
Spendor SP 1/5 Monitors
Hi, I have owned the Spendor 1/5. Bought a pair used from a Spendor dealer in 1998 or 1999. It was listed as a part of the Classic range but not wildly successful, discontinued maybe 7 or 8 yrs. ago. This was a relatively small speaker between the...
JM Labs Original Daline Speakers
I tried that. I couldn't find any info on the original Daline model. Thanks,TLH
Got money in the bank. Please help
If you're lucky you might be able to pick up a pair of Quad 57s for around that price (though recently they seem to be selling for more). You'll sacrifice some low end response and some of the "dynamics" of box speakers, but there isn't another sp...
Reference 3a MM De Capo's vs Totem Sttaf vs LSi9's
Hi, Having owned several Totems and the 3As, I personally would prefer the Ref. 3As to most any Totem, but I'm not sure they are a great speaker for the music you list. I found that they were best on classical/jazz/blues, less so on classic rock. ...
Tube magic in solid state?
I like Sugden as well, but the only SS amp I've heard that almost fooled me into thinking I was listening to tubes is the Sonneteer integrated (another British integrated; not very well known in the US but I would highly recommend). I've heard it ...
Tube Amps
Another possibility: a used VAC Avatar integrated. I have one and love it. Should be able to drive your Ushers easily.TLH
Placement for Soliloquy speakers
Thanks. I have a very basic question. In deciding on placement, should I measure from the middle of the speaker, the front, the back or what? Thanks again,TLH
RB300 VTA adjustment on Nottingham Horizon
You may need a Nott arm collar from Audiophile Systems, the Nott distributor. The Horizon I had came w/ the standard RB250 and VTA adjustment was very easy, but I don't know whether the standard Rega VTA adjustors will work with a Nott armbase. Go...
Best combo - integrated amp/ speakers/$8,000
Hi, I have much the same preferences as you. VAC is a good choice in electronics if those are your goals, and there are certainly other great tube amps out there, but like VAC, most are pricey. There are some SS amps I like as well. Spendor, Harbe...
Best combo - integrated amp/ speakers/$8,000
Hi, My standard Avatar worked great w/ Reference 3a de Capos, and believe it or not, also worked well w/ the Spendor S3/5s. I've heard the Harbeths, but with SS; didn't get a chance to audition w/ my VAC. Above about 70hz, the 3/5s are perhaps the...
