best vintage stereo receiver I agree with the Harman Kardon recommendation, and would add Luxman to the list. The Marantz 2015 is a cute little bugger and has some juice with efficient speakers. I was pleasantly surprised when I listened to it. I would consider Sansui also- I...
Fisher 800B or Fisher 500C which one is the best I've read that sonically, the B-series has really stellar midrange compared to the C's. The main functional difference between the 500 and 800 is that the 800 has AM reception as well as FM. Good techs are busy- I wouldn't expect a tech to be abl...
Blown Classe CAP-80 A good tech should have little difficulty locating a replacement for those transistors. Tech should match them and if this is a stereo amp, should replace the transistors in both channels even if only one side is bad.
B&W 804s too bright I've read many posts here and elsewhere that mention B&W speakers being very bright. In contrast the Martin Logan are frequently characterized as having smooth, non-fatiguing treble.
What is a high end stereo SUPPOSED to sound like? It should sound so good that you sold your soul to get it, but you're overjoyed because you still have your soul and you tricked the devil into accepting money for music!
why do we argue? That which constitutes the ability to claim scientific proof requires rigorous methodology, expensive test equipment and likely more money and time that most of us would rather spend listening. Speculation is largely free, other than caloric burn ...
McIntosh-Keep the Classics or Sell for Newer Gear? If you're happy with the performance I say hang on to it. I agree with Ces4x4 as far as keeping the equipment up to snuff. As far as taking the top cover off and writing down the cap values, the tech is going to be in there anyway and modern caps ...
Warm Replacement for Adcom GFA 545 II Unsound makes a good point, but I suspect that the Adcom is not quite up to the level of the other equipment you have. The Marantz integrateds with the HDAM module are good sounding, and I've found used Luxman or McIntosh power amps to be reliable...
Big changes ... down the road Not me... The "Cloud" scares the crap outta me. I guess I don't understand it and prefer tactile media. Call it nostalgia, but I like having physical copies of photos and music instead of a sketchy hard-drive full of jpegs or .aiff or whatever. I ...
Examples of Out of Phase Recordings? There's a difference between what is referred to as phase-shifting, and sounds that are out of phase with each other. Phase-shifting or flanging (the swooshing sort of sound on the Hendrix recording mentioned above) is caused when a signal source ...
Need advice on how to sound insulate my room Have you tried de-coupling the speakers from the floor? had a similar problem and proper stands with Blu-tack helped quite a bit.
a solid state amp that is recessed in the treble You may consider the new Luxman amps. I've found their treble to be smooth even with speakers using titanium tweeters which I find harsh on many systems. I also found the big Marantz monoblocks quite linear in the trebles.
older dedicated midfi cd player....2nd system Play station 1 is pretty hard to beat, IMO. I paid $20.00 at a local used game outfit and it's surprising. It does take a few days being left on to sound its best.Mine even came with a 30 money back guarantee. I put mine up on some hardwood block...
Tube replacement for Dynaco ST 70 I have the JJ E34L's in mine and have been very happy with them. I feel that the EH tubes are really good in guitar amps, but prefer the JJ in the Dynaco. notice that these are E 34 L not EL 34- so they draw a touch more current. Mine started sou...
Could use your advice re: tube gear River251, Atmasphere is exactly right (again!) What I meant was have them re-capped, then give them a listen . If at that point you prefer something else, you can sell them for a pretty good chunk of change and buy the amp you like. By "back in th... |
