Can Vandy's get along with cats?
I was worried about my Vandersteen's also, but the cat has very little interest in them. She tried to use the cloth on my Altec floor-standers as a scratching post just once. I got up quickly and yelled "NO!" and she's never done it again. You cou...
Can the copy sound better than the original?
Thanks everyone, for the comments and information! This may be my favorite new cheap "tweak". I've heard digital done well (SACD and in the recording studio) so I don't mind shelling out for cd's- especially if they can be bettered "in-house". This...
MAC C200 PHONO STAGE HELP PLEASE
The complaint about the MC stage being hardwired for ten ohms refers to a general audio principal that the input impedance should be 10x or greater in relation to the source impedance. Personally I would try it for myself and see. I would also rec...
Looking at simple set-up for iMac to preamp
3.5 mm phone plug to stereo RCA cable. You can get this from Radio Shack (no affiliation whatsoever). Plug the 3.5 mm plug (like a mini headphone plug) into the back of the Imac, plug the RCA plugs into pre-amp or integrated, adjust gain at the iM...
Explain speaker cable resistance, capacitacance?
Resistance is opposition to the flow of electrons in a conductor. Higher resistance basically means that more of the signal is being dissipated as heat.Sound-wise I doubt you'd ever hear the resistive component of these cables unless something els...
Chasing 60 hz hum
Does the 7150 have a two-prong cable? If it has a non- polarized plug, take a voltage reading from the chassis to the screw that holds the wall-outlet cover in place. Reverse the plug and take a reading again. The plug orientation with the lower v...
DIY HD Tracks from mint LPs?
Try it! Your imac will record at 24/96 at the audio input, digital optical, or spdif in. I googled: " imac sampling/bit rate, itunes " and found this info pretty quickly. Looks like the s/n ratio at the audio input is only 90db though. I would jus...
Speakers and system for compressed recordings?
FWIW, I find that I enjoy music from a certain period more when reproduced on a system relevant to that period, when possible. Aerosmith and Black Sabbath never sound better to me than when cranked through Altecs' ,JBL, or large Advents. Motown sou...
Best Rock Drummers
Thomas Prigeon of the "Mars Volta" is astounding, and Phil Selway of Radioheadis one of my favorite "invisible" drummers (the guys that just play what's right for the song-no flashy fills or pyrotechnics). Terry Bozzio is certainly no slouch, and ...
NAD C541 Tray Won't Open
I'm no NAD guru, but you should be able to take the top cover off by removing the screws on the sides (there maybe a couple on the rear of the unit holding the top on as well) which will allow you to remove the cd, and see if something is jammed-u...
Favorite
Pioneer Pl-71, JVC QL-A7, and a Miracord/Elac 40H that has smashing dynamics. Unfortunately, the Harman Kardon ST-5 (Rabco arm) has proven to be a difficult customer- the sound when it WAS working was very nice.
Originals vs. reissues/current issues
My experience with re-issue pressings has been hit-or-miss.As far as the content - I'm a total music snob, but there's lots of "Bad" music that I like. Time has been kinder to some musical forms than others. I wouldn't be caught dead listening to ...
Buying Tubes Again; Maddening
The number of new tubes being manufactured today is way up from where it was 20 years ago. If we only buy NOS tubes, the prices will increase exponentially as the supply disappears. If we try and buy the best of the newer manufacture tubes we will...
Relays, Capacitors, and Blown Speakers
I have a 7140 that is exhibiting relay problems-just takes a really long time to turn on the speakers. Had a start-up pulse take out the tweeters on one of my DCM's right after getting an amp out of the shop and spending $300 for all new caps and ...
Garage Band Hangover
I'll have to take a look at that site. I think my favorite garage band from that era would be "Bubble Puppy", but I haven't listened to them in years. Seems like the MC5,The Stooges, SRC and Blue Cheer would fit my garage band favorites list as we...
