Powered speakers show audiophiles are confused
@lonemountain , I would "question" saying a 15" woofer costs almost the same as the 10, especially at current aluminum prices. It is not just the added material costs of the basket, but amortized tooling of what is invariably lower volume, and a m...
Interesting situation! Do we need this....
I have been doing low carb since before it was fashionable and learning to eat to match my activities, carb loading when I was going to need it. I found that strength training was the best change for weight loss. More muscle mass, more calories bu...
Why does pulling out main speakers from wall improve sound?
While responding to another post, I was reminded of the Dutch and Dutch 8C. They address the issue in a different way: 1) They use mainly acoustic methods to present an out-of-phase "midrange" signal at the sides, to cancel the midrange as it is ...

Of course, anyone who claims to be a knowledgeable audiophile and up on active speaker technology should know some of the things I have mentioned, that go beyond simple active crossovers, are already on the market, http://www.kiiaudio.com/acousti...

Further, @kota1 , for trying to raise the knowledge of the group I have received abusive replies like yours. Now it is like you are actively trying to stunt other people's knowledge. Why is that? You can read them or not read them. It is your cho...

@texbychoice    Regarding requisite personal knowledge, not a single post in this thread provides verifiable technical bona fides, only opinions or recitation of personal system usage experience.   I strongly encourage you to point out exact...

@donavabdear when you say bring it away from the walls do you mean speakers now somewhat up against the wall but will now be mounted some fixed distance from the wall but suspended?  Basics but DSP can compensate for boundary reinforcement but it ...

@donavabdear  Takes time and acclimatization. Once you get used to that resolution, there is no going back. It's harsh at first but then you get used to it. I think the same could be said about film/digital. Disconcerting at first, then you get u...

Mountain bikes have heavy wheels, or can, and you are paying a double penalty for rolling weight. It is not much of an issue on a road bike. The extra 15lbs I am carrying on my ass and elsewhere is where I need weight reduction, not my bicycles :-)
Bypassing Caps - what is it really about?
Oh come on. Do you think with million dollar development budgets that we never listened to anything?  What do you think companies who develop speakers do? Listening confirms measurements and measuring confirms listening. It is always a two way str...
Bypassing Caps - what is it really about?
@clustrocasual , If you means capacitors passing signals in electronics maybe there are some effects. In speakers though, you have to look at the combined effect of the capacitor and driver. If I bypass a 100uF (was mentioned above) electrolytic ...

@invalid, how do you measure purity? No driver is a perfect radiator, so they are not pure. Electronics can be, for any reasonable measure, pure. I see active speakers as the melding of electronics which can be pure, with drivers that are not, suc...
Bypassing Caps - what is it really about?
See that’s your problem right there. You confuse $40 in parts and a weekend with experience. I have been designing speakers for professional applications for the better part of 2 decades. When you lack experience, you may be able to convince yours...
Powered speakers show audiophiles are confused
@invalid, I have to view purity from a throughput from the input to the amplifier to what comes out of the drivers. I don't think a case can be made, with any set of drivers, where the purity from input to output cannot be superior with an active...

@lonemountain  It's tens of feet -maybe even a hundred feet of wire in a giant LF inductor set up for a very low crossover point. No maybe. If someone makes a design choice to use an air core inductor on a woofer circuit in a 3 way, it does no...
