what preamp to use
Limited to $100 look for a used Creek OBH-8. They show up here and eBay regularly. Now for $30-$40 you could go to Radio Shack and get the battery powered one they sell. Don't laugh; it is actually pretty good. Battery power gives it very low noise...
XLR, RCA or BNC?
For digital cables the best is non of the above...ST Glass is probably best (and I don't mean toslink).
XLR, RCA or BNC?
Connection for what and where? For short runs of cables, it will not matter much or really at all. People who need to run very long runs of cables usually prefer XLR, assuming of course.....(see below).....Something to consider is....are you going...
Rich sounding line conditioners?
Hopefully a line condition will create an environment with no sound signature as far as power goes. Then them music can come through."Conditioners" are not the best way to go. The units that provide clean balanced power are better. Exact PowerBlue...
Someone please explain the logic of upgrades
Same answer Pmwoodward. Cost and supply. I remember a conversation I had with Stan Warren a few years ago. He was backed up on modifying CD players because he was having trouble getting some of the Black Gate caps he like to use. Now if Stan could...
Someone please explain the logic of upgrades
You'll almost never get the "best" tube with a new piece of gear. In many cases the best sounding tube for a particular piece of gear is a tube that has not been manufactured for 50 to 70 years. In many cases it is a major search (months to a year...
Help me find a Simple Hi End Turntable
If you like your MMF-5, then now about the MMF-7, MMF-9 ??Also the VPI Scout..
Someone please explain the logic of upgrades
Tube rolling is simply trying different brands of tubes to change the sound from the tubes that came with the gear.
Ground Loop Question
When two or more components are connected to a common ground through different paths, a ground loop occurs. Current flow through these multiple paths can cause noise or a 50Hz/60Hz hum.To eliminate ground loops, all signal grounds need to go to on...
Cable suggestion for CJ preamp. Help please .
Just trust your ears. Generally what you say is true, but tests done by some audio magazines were all over the map. Two cables would test out the same, but one would sound better. Or sometimes a cable that would test poorly would sound good, wheth...
Someone please explain the logic of upgrades
Gee Jeffreybehr I was kidding.....There is some truth in it though......As others have said; the price point is important. Supply is also a factor. Some parts are not in large enough supply to mass produce enough of an item. But they are available...
Can anybody define LOW OUTPUT...?
I would not get hung up on the terms High/Mid/Low output. It is like trying to define what is really meant by "low fat" on product labels. I doubt any audio designer ponders very much about how a design will be classified in the market place (low/...
Someone please explain the logic of upgrades
The logic of upgrades is to separate you from more of your money.
Can anybody define LOW OUTPUT...?
Generally speaking a HIGH output (MC or other) cartridge is one that could be used with a standard phono stage/preamp, that would normally be for a moving magnet cartridge, etc.Lower output designs are used in the hope of lowering the noise floor,...
