Wanted: Exceptional preamp w/remote
I am ignorant what a CAT is. But the Conrad Johnson PFR solid state preamp has a remote and is outstanding. Stereophile Class A
First time buyer-HOW?
If you are talking about first time buying on Audiogon the others advise is good.
First time buyer-HOW?
A reputable audio dealer can help. Where do you live? There must be someone on Audiogon near you who can help. Stay away from Circuit City or any chain store where they will sell you anything to pay their rent. A good dealer will put no pressure o...
Love of MUSIC or love of GEAR
PS: I do sing in a professional chorus, and do go to lots of live concerts, so I guess I fit in the musician group also; just not full time. We/I will be performing with Dave Brubeck in Baltimore in March if anyone is interested.
Love of MUSIC or love of GEAR
Both; When I find a classical recording performance I like better than the one I have I "upgrade". The performance matter most to me. The audiophile interest comes from wanting these recordings to sound as good as possible. I do sometimes have mor...
Rotel 991 cd player
If your existing CD Player will make a good transport a DAC is a fine idea. The MSB Link DAC III is great for only $400. The RCD-991 is a very nice player for the money. I usually do not find Rotel players to my likeing, but this player is the exc...
The best CD Player for the money
For new under $500: Cambridge Audio D500-SE List $450 available new for $349 to $399. This is 24bit so it has a future. The original D500 is also excellent (20bit).
Want Good Inexpensive RCA Video Cable
Yes Jeff, do not have S Video on my TV currently. A while back in a pinch I used a Nordost Blue Heaven Audio interconnect and the picture and color was amazing. Do not know why it worked so well. Anyone else??
Rock and Roll Snobbery
Seems perfectly logical to me that systems would not be for all music types. Look at musical instruments themselves. Some violins are better for classical, some as fiddles for country music, some for Irish folk music. There are all kinds of guitar...
MIT Tube Cables and Solid State Amps?
I would try to demo a pair and see. All equipment reacts to cables differently, and considering all the tube and ss amps out there, as well as speakers that are also affected by the cables, I can't see how they can claim they are tube cables only....
system matching help
I agree with going with a good Home Theater system considering your intended use and music taste.
What aspect ratio screen I should buy?
I would go with the one that gives you the biggest sharpest pictures regardless how big the black bands on the sides may be. I find once I start watching a movie, the rest of the screen not lit disappears.
Sonic Frontiers Preamps - Cold & thin?
I had a similar experience with the SF Anthem line. I think system matching is the answer. In my case at the time I was looking to upgrade my preamp, so the Anthem was not a match. I have heard them (SF and Anthem) in systems where they sounded gr...
Woofer Problems
Check around, there are many companies that do re-foams of the surrounds. Check with a couple high end audio dealers near you. Better than replacing the woofers with different kind, which would probably change the sound of your speakers. (Maybe be...
Would a UPS be as good as the PS power?
I believe you right. The APC gear is a battery back-up, not a power supply. The battery kicks in when the power goes out or "blinks". Since the APC Smart 1400 is OK for audio equipment and is not conditioner, has anyone considered putting an audio...
