I have an original Winfield, and like it. It does not glorify records...it tells it like it is. Good recordings are fabulous with great depth, air, etc....( even monos sound very good). Poorly recorded discs will sound just that way. Tracks everyt... 
Record clamp/weight and turntable speed
There is a series of posts on the VPI discussion site that tells of a modification where you use 2 dimes opposite the spindle on the record, then put the weight on, then put the ring clamp on.   I do that with mine....makes a significant step up.

The high pass filter reduces the lows at a specific rate, but the lows are increased at the same rate which gives a flat frequency response.

Truly Balanced Cheaper Preamplifiers?
Lots of components say they are balanced but include an XLR connection for sales.  The real deal is differentially balanced....seperate circuits for the + and -.  They are twice as much to make as single ended.

Disagree with MillerCarbon....depends on the quality of CD player/Turntable setup/recording itself.  Many times the CD is better, many times the turntable is better.
