..it depends.... mine is at about 7 or 8 using the Ayre C5xemp when its playing most CD's. When it plays SACD's the volume knob is on 12 or 1. When on phono...1 or even 2

Chadnliz...what do you mean that Vandersteens don't play loudly? Mine get louder than I would want to listen to....and too...in what part of the hall do you usually get tickets? Dynamics in the 1st row are way different than the middle of the hall... 
Need help with IC upgrade Cardas Golden Cross
I've posted this before.... I tried all of the Cardas cables and there was nothing that was worse in my system. At least try others...Cardas may very well work for you.

I know they are cheap, but at least try Anti-Cables. They do everything right for my system.

N80nut....Forget the Zerodust. Better and way cheaper is Mr. Clean Magic Eraser. Cut a 1/2 inch thick, 1 inch square from the block, put it on the turntable, cue your arm into/onto the Magic Eraser - up and down via the cuing mechanism, brush the ...

Its "yes" for me. No matter how carefully I handle LP's I always have some new tick,or pop during the next play. It always pisses me off...just like the always present "sicko" who waits for the quietest, tenderest part of the concert to cough, sne...

Eandylee...another thing about Vandersteen speakers is they are musical...no matter what kind you are interested in.
