Sbank....yes Every time you change any adjustment on an arm you must change all the other parameters that are affected. Time consuming.yes, but you only have to do it again and again, until it is set. 
Diminishing hearing ability?
Loydc...yuk..hearing aids are awful. The beauty of sound is totally gone, replaced by digital sand of the worst kind. I tried a few different brands, and decided to live without them.

Also to note that the XLR connections are non standard from Rowland. I had lots of weird stuff happening with my Rowland until I discovered that. I don't remember how the connections are different, but on mine there was a difference.

I had Rowlands that got warm but never hot...never the less, if there was anything really wrong with your equipment, there are protection circuits that would shut it down.

Another avenue of concern is a grounding issue. If the turntable is not running, I'm wondering if feedback is the problem. Do all the grounding tricks....eliminate the 3rd pin of the sub via a cheater, reverse the plug, using an extension cord, pl...
