DAC1 Pre or DAC1 USB with Passive?
Have only had a DAC-1 for the last six months - but it replaced a much appreciated EAD DSP-9000 Pro in my main system.Benchmark is very detailed and fatigue free . My only service problem was that it blew one fuse for no particular reason a few mo...
Need help ID'ing B&O 5 sided tower speakers
These are what B&O called Penta's. Very expensive for the period and self powered - so never really caught on around here.Having said that - I found myself really listening to these for the first time while installing display shelving in the l...
peak current
This thing was built before the manipulation of Ohm's law led to the need/want to list a current spec.Dead giveaway that it's probably a honest amp : 1.) age 2.)big heavy transformer 3.) substantial heat sinks for output transistors. Not bridgeabl...
Annoying Sibilance Problem
The specs for the phono stage make no sense? Is there any chance that you are running into the MC input or your preamp is set for MC gain internally? How high is your volume control set ? Is it possible that you're phono stage is overloading?
which DAC?
Benchmark DAC-1 - enough of them out there on the used market to make them occasionally affordable.Simple and amazingly detailed/musical DAC.
Need to replace Subwoofer volume control
The specs that you are going to be concerned with are the resistance ( probably in the Kohm or 100Kohm range - 10 thousand to hundred thousand ohm range) since these are US made? this will probably be marked on the back of the potentiometer it's s...
Best Buy is going to sell vinyl records
Very, very limited selection. At least in the three local BB's I've visited - they probably don't stock even 75 titles in total - mostly new releases. The biggest problem is no dedicated LP browser boxes - the only place they can put LP's is on the ...
Cleaned paint in front of speaker
Don't get steel wool anywhere near a speaker! All it takes is a few fragments to migrate onto the speakers cone - over time it will work it's way thru the cone or dome into the VC gap - not a good thing. Had several customers trash their speakers ...
Background Noise-In the vinyl or system related?
Argh- WINDEX!. Spent most of my audio career in the period when vinyl was king. If there is any commonly available liquid that somebody didn't try to "clean" their records with - I'd be surprised.Almost all of these improvised solutions were a dis...
Need help-McIntosh MA 5100
Any older unit that has tape monitor switches - these are the first thing to check -especially if you aren't using the switches."Exercise" the switch(s) by flipping ,punching or rotating them repeatedly - if your problem changes or goes away even ...
Vintage tube guys
I think that one of the reasons that you aren't running into a lot of chatter about these products here is that this forum is primarily about using and listening to equipment/music.A lot of "classic" old tube stuff has been collected now for a goo...
My system is getting worse - now what?
Johnny got a good point - your test procedure for woofer failure may not be valid? I'm going to try and describe how to test for a warped woofer voice coil. Let me make one point first : This is something you do to your speakers - YOURS - never ,e...
why so quiet?
This worked the last time -are you sure the stylus is seated all the way into the cartridge body ?
My system is getting worse - now what?
First off - find a shop that can look at your 810's for you . If you have damaged voice coils this is the equivalent to driving a car with a failed suspension - nothings going to work right.I've heard your speakers and liked them then (20+ years a...
SACD playback the DAC
Rabbani - the essential problem here was that Sony was completely paranoid about digital domain copying of SACD's. the result was the license to make SACD players required the builder to not offer a SACD digi out unless it was through a proprietar...
