Amp for Dali Hellicon 400 mk2
It's your amp (someone on Agon told me that once when I was complaining about my speakers and I did not believe them; turns out they were right, though it cost me thousands to learn that lesson!). I bought a pair of Dali 400s after owning a pair o...
looking for new speakers $2 to $3K
I'm always reticent to make suggestions, but I have paid some attention to speakers in your price range (it was mine too). Given your desire for "Transparency, detail and sound stage," I'd suggest you consider the Dali Helicon 400. They sell for a...
Musical Fidelity A5 CDP
I own the A5 (so take anything I type with a grain of salt) and find it to be an excellent CDP. Perfect for everyone? Heck no, and thank goodness for different tastes. But it is very resolving and the soundstaging is especially excellent. I know t...
Dali Helicon 400 or Acoustic Zen Adagio?
Dcstep, you're a good sport, thanks. My point was that every speaker design represents trade offs, especially those that are priced within reach of many listeners. For me, 30 hz would be nice, but it is never my principal focus; if that is especial...
Dali Helicon 300 with Sansui 9090DB = disaster??
Welcome to the madness (and the fun). I have found the Helicon series to be remarkably revealing of changes in downstream gear (amps, cables, tubes, you name it) more than any other speakers I have ever owned. For me, the magic happened when I cha...
Dali Helicon 400 or Acoustic Zen Adagio?
Dcstep, this is not intended as some sort of challenge, but perhaps you're asking the Helicons to reproduce sounds they're not really designed to reproduce. Do you know the frequency you're focusing on? If that frequency range is especially import...
Genalex GL KT88 Reissue on Conrad Johnson 12
This is second hand information, but I've read that about a year ago there was a bad run of GL KT88s and no real issues since. And the handful of people I know who have tried the reissues has found them to be their favorites of all available KT88s...
What's better than the Jolida JD100
A friend just bought the Jolida and for the price I like it quite a lot. Replaced the stock tubes with a pair of RCA triple mica 12AX7s and the change from stock was downright remarkable; entirely different machine. That and a better power cord an...
Tube integrated amps
I agree with Pubul57 in that there is more going on here than decibels. In fact, in my example of ~40 tube watts driving well a set of speakers with a mildly ugly impedance curve, that tube amp replaced a MF A5 that claimed 250+ watts into 8 ohms....
Tube integrated amps
I've used a Rogue Tempest II to drive a set of Paradigm 100's that have a somewhat scary impedance curve and it really did fine, even in triode (~40 watts). The curve for those Dynaudios is beautifully benign, so if you're after the tube vibe (me ...
Moving away from tubes. Is this a good idea?
And don't fear biasing, especially for amps like the Cronus that come with built-in meters. Flip a switch, read the gauge, turn a screw, then onto the next tube. Takes lass than a minute and is deeply satisfying .
Speaker Opinions
Jb0194,I liked the Galenas from top to bottom, especially at their price point, so yes I thought the highs were quite nice; detailed but not abrasive. In general, I'd classify myself as someone who is pretty sensitive to a top end that is tilted u...
Build location for tube integrateds
I recently made the switch from SS to tubes so this thread and Zamdrang's on "tubes for rock" have been interesting to me. I listen to a wide range of music, and I occasionally spin rock recordings (last night it was Audioslave, followed my a seri...
Speaker Opinions
I did not hear the Gershmans, but I loved the 3-way Selahs. I thought they were nicely detailed and very well balanced across the tonal spectrum. I'd say that they lean a bit to the warmer side of neutral, a sound that I prefer, even when driven w...
Vandersteen 3a sig vs. Paradigm studio 100
Chadnliz has it right on; I own the 100s and have come to like them but only after moving to a tube amp. With a SS amp their tweeter made me nuts. Very different sound than the warmer Vandersteens.
