Random pop sounds in my system are scaring me
Yet another vote for a power tube going south, just happened to me the other day (grumble, grumble).Do you have a spare? If so, change out the tube or tubes in the channel where the pop is occurring.
What is the proper way to dispose of old tubes?
Art -- perfect. I bought a big batch of random tubes for a few bucks, mostly from old TVs and the like, just for fun. Some are really beautiful objects. When I showed them to an artist friend, she wanted to use them in some sort of future creation...
Cary 303/300 or Musical Fidelity A5 with Mac gear?
I didn't like the A5 amp very much but I do like the A5 CDP. Buying a DAC could certainly be a smart choice, especially if you wanted to try PC-based audio at some point where it would be offer some flexibility. I have a Paradisea that I use in my...
Cary 303/300 or Musical Fidelity A5 with Mac gear?
Hawkeye, I happen to have both the A5 and 303/300 right now, and honestly, I would be happy with either player. The Cary has the edge in resolution and extension; the A5 provides a bit more cohesive musical picture (if you have any idea of what th...
Need rec on $500 preamp
I own a Rogue 99 which I like very much. For $550, the Rogue 66 identified by Darkmoebius has got to be darned hard to beat provided you're interested in tubes. In general, I like NAD too for the money, but I can't imagine it stands a chance again...
Highly efficient speakers to pair with my SET amp
Hi All,I am the evil friend that Betsy mentioned, the one who is intending to drive every last bit of pleasure from her listening experiences, and instead transforming those into a set of analytical exercises! Even though there is some truth to ha...
sweetest sounding ss integrated
Not much to offer here, except to say that the Sim amps I have heard seemed far from euphoric to me.
Good integrated amp for Paradigm Studio 40?
I'll second the Onkyo A-9555. A friend has a pair of Paradigm 100s v3 that she is driving with the Onkyo and it's quite nice; a bit warmish yet nicely detailed. She replaced an NAD 325 which I liked too, but the Onkyo was better (or so 3 of 3 of u...
Paradisea Dac
Tvad--thanks. I went and found a NOS GE on eBay and it's on the way. Cheap too!
Paradisea Dac
I've thought about suggesting to the eBay guy that he offer flavor packs of 3-5 single tubes so we can roll them through the DAC... I want one of each not two! :-)
I Feel Overwhelmed....Please Help
We're all pretty excited about your new rig -- love it!As much as I hate to agree with Dcstep (joke! really!), I'm going to and suggest that you direct any remaining energy to hunt for some 12AX7s to replace whatever comes with both the CDP and am...
I Feel Overwhelmed....Please Help
I've been following this thread and in my view, you're getting good advice. I wanted to second Tvad's comment about buying gear that is popular, this way if it doesn't suit, you can sell it right away. A couple of good examples might be the Rega A...
I got around $2000 to play with....
A friend recently purchased the Onkyo pair (9555 and 7555) and she's driving a pair of Paradigm Studio 100s and it really is quite a nice rig. Reasonably detailed, very musical, plenty of power; I like it quite a lot. I've heard quite a few more e...
Amp for Dali Hellicon 400 mk2
My last comment on the topic. Dan, Dave has consistently expressed issues with the Dalis lowest octave, so you should be sure that you are satisfied with their performance there as you sort these out in your own system. In my rig, I am satisfied w...
Amp for Dali Hellicon 400 mk2
Dan, system synergy is real, as much as I wish it wasn't. What that means for us is that speakers work better with some amps than with others. So even if someone loves an amp, it may not be the best match for a given set of speakers. For my tastes...
