component cones/spikes vs. rubber
My Star Sound rack is mounted on large cones, uses steel supports filled with very small steel bearings and the components rest on other steel cones. The whole thing is designed to couple strongly to the floor and transfer vibrations from the comp...
Different arm for VPI Scoutmaster
Not the SME as it would require cutting the base. Something like the Jelco 250 or 750 would probably be relatively easy, as would some other arms. From my experiences with a Scoutmaster [I am a VPI dealer] the original arm is a good match; unless ...
Best way to categorize your Vinyl collection
I finally [after 5 moves had totally mixed them] got mine in order. Piano music in one section, symphonies in another, organ, rock, folk. jazz etc. I can find things now but I don't know if anyone else could. These are my LPs, my CDs are still in ...
component cones/spikes vs. rubber
Do you want to couple or isolate? They will both work but give different results. I use a mixture of cones and roller bearings myself but preferences here will be system and taste dependent.
Tube rolling for Musical Fidelity Nuvista M3?
I put some new ones in I ordered from England. I was doing some other things to it at the time so too much time elapsed to be sure but I thought it might have sounded a little better; I don't think it makes the big difference that all tube units s...
Origins of the word Amarra
This sounds like total nonsense! A language that could be converted into an algorithm and used as a universal translation device? Translating Chinese into English by means of a third language? Name a language that IS NOT synthetic and highly struc...
Luxman M6000
I had the similar M4000, it should work with either tube or SS preamps, I used it with Lux CL35 [tube] and C1000 [SS]. If it has level controls on front panel like the 4000 then any line level input can be used.
Custom sized speaker stand recommendations.
Second that, I am using some for my Spendor S100.
Digital room correction, any recommendations?
Do the room first, you may not need anything else.
Confused about biamping and crossovers
Active crossovers are much better but have to be matched to the speakers very carefully. Also you need an amp for each driver if they are going to be fully active. The advantage with active is that each amp sees the speaker directly and not throug...
VPI TNT Super Platter
They are suppose to be but I would check with VPI to see if they had any left. I am a VPI dealer but they often have things that aren't on the current price sheet.
The best tweeter design
It is my own experience that implementation is at least as important as tweeter type. I have used Ionic, ribbon, and many different types of domes. The first two have many virtues but are hard to match with standard cone speakers. I have tried tit...
Amp's nominal power rating - any use?
As you point out perceived power is the result of a set of complex variables that would be impossible to reduce to a single formula. The amp output is one of these variables and as such has a value.
VPI TNT Super Platter
A friend of mine bought one for his Scout and he really likes it. He thought it made a huge difference.I had one on my Aries Extended but I bought it that way so can't comment on difference with standard platter.
what is the best, least costly DAC...?
I suspect that the problem was the Mac components; my friend used a Mac 402 with matching Mac pre driving his Wilson Sasha speakers until I took my Musical Fidelity NuVista M3 over, they were gone within a week. Since I do use Musical Fidelity com...
