REL Strata III spikes
It depends who you talk to at Sumiko, I was given contradictory advice in emails by two people there about whether to use rugs under the subs. I used mine on concrete [with rugs] with the cones and they worked fine. Of course I don't know what the...
REL Strata III spikes
I don't know for sure but the manual talks about using the spikes as if they were included. I talked to Sumico about them and they were clueless, suggesting I talk to a dealer. As I understand it they not only import REL but now own the company so...
REL Strata III spikes
I have two REL Stadium subs. They do come with spikes but I didn't get them either as I bought them used. I am using Star Sound cones on mine and it made a noticeable difference to me and others listening when we compared them with and without. I ...
Help a recovering audiophile build a system
If I was buying new I would look at the Krell S 300i, which you can get for $2000. Used opens a wide field, Blue Circle isn't famous but I like their products. CJ 2000 looks good, I saw one on here for $3200 the other day. I like the Naim DAC, the...
Gamut Si100
Very good built but maybe a little expensive. In a HIFICRITIC group test it scored around 32 while the Krell S 300i scored 45; the Krell can be had new for $2000. It was still recommended by them while the Krell was a best buy; I suspect the 150 m...
Is it ok to Bi-amp using different Brand/model of
No, all you need to do is to set the relative level once and since both will receive a signal that varies in the same way from the preamp they will stay in balance. If one were coming from a fixed output like tape out then you would have to rebala...
Is it ok to Bi-amp using different Brand/model of
It is often considered ideal to use identical amps; balanced against this is that requirements for different parts of the frequency range can be very different. The bass will benefit from SS while you can use tubes for midrange and highs. The only...
Sealed vs Ported Subwoofers
I have 3 pairs of ported ones and one pair of sealed ones and they all work fine. As previous poster said it is the individual design that matters.
Upgrade suggestions from McCormack w/SMC mods?
Mac 402 not that good, CJ Primer 350 much better bet. I heard the first in my friends system and have the CJ.
What is the Diffrence in these AC Receptacels
You can install them yourself [ AFTER cutting off the power at the main switch and checking carefully]. I was surprised how much better the FIM 880s were than the "hospital grade"ones I had been using on dedicated lines. Continuity checkers are a ...
Pre-amp newbie question
The reason I can say it is because it is true.No preamp can have the space to to contain phono stages like the two I use , one of which weighs 75 pounds by itself and the other 50. The best phono stages are all stand alone ones, the Dynavector is ...
Good DIY suggestions?
Wilmslow Audio in England has some very good speaker kits, DIY versions of ATC and several others. Madisound over here has some good ones also.
VPI Scout II questions
I have the Classic set up right now, had a Scout, Scoutmaster, and loaded Aries Extended in the last year, as you might guess I am a VPI dealer. A friend of mine has a Classic which he likes better than the TNT he once had, I think it is a good ta...
pro's and con's of a 4 ohm speaker?
Again, it all depends on the interaction between the speaker and amp, the impedance , IN ITSELF, does not make the speaker sound better or worse. If your amp can handle the load fine, if not update your fire insurance.
Pre-amp newbie question
Dedicated phono stages are better than built in ones, whether it is worth the money to you is another question. If you go with something like the Project Tube Box 11 SE or the Dynavector P 75 [ I am a dealer for the Dynavector] you will notice a c...
