Back In the Day Damn, I am old. There were a lot of brands of good equipment that I am sure almost no younger audiophile has heard of. Hadley, Ge-Go, Fane, Goodmans, Sherwood, Scott, Radford, Transcriptors, Rec-o-kut, Gray, Hartley, Viking, Ampex, Braun, Bozak, F...
Back In the Day Yes; I was in Chicago in the 60s and a bunch of us would read the Chicago Tribune Sunday ads when it came out Sat night for the latest listings. I changed equipment much more then as things were A LOT cheaper. A pair of Quad 57s were under $400 in...
Technics SP-10 + SME 3009 S2 Improved I would think more if it is in good shape; assuming that I would say the arm is worth $300 and the table $600 at least. And no, I don't want to buy it, my wife has made it quite clear that I have too much gear already.
Cardas Speaker placement.. I agree with Phil; I use 6" corner traps and 2 4' x2' x4" panels lying against the wall and the increase is bass very noticeable. See my system which is listed under my threads.
Thiel 3.5 upgrade to 3.6 or 2.4 worthwhile? I would put the money in a better amp if it were me. Also I find PBJ to be a little sticky at times; sorry the Devil made me do it.
Cardas Speaker placement.. parallelAll systems are starting points only. I have used the Cardas and then moved the speakers closer to the side walls. My GamuTs come with a formula that is complex enough for an advanced math class; I can't get them as far apart an they want ...
Speaker damage from running I use 2 channel for my video system and the main speakers always see full range signals. Currently using B&W 805s; have used Spendor SP-2s and the smallest Epos [12?] Driving them with Meridian 605 power amps [150 watts per channel]. Never had...
Technics SP-10 + SME 3009 S2 Improved "People want things to just plug 'n play" That may be true of the general population but I have found that Audiogon members want to assemble their own systems and that things are usually worth more individually than as a group. IMHO the table is b...
What's a 30-year old Grace F9-E Ruby worth? I sold an F9-E for $250 on Audiogon a couple of years ago; not a Ruby but standard. But it all depends on if there is a buyer who wants one when you have one to sell; prices can vary widely.
Henry Kloss, Tomlinson Holman, Saul, and others? I also met Saul Marantz about that time but can't recall much about it , there were several other people there in the room then and the conversation was general. I can recall a long conversation with Stewart Hegeman which occurred at a Chicago hif...
Upgrading from Rega Apollo to Rega Saturn CD?? I agree with Foster, get the Rega DAC. I had one and it was very good; only sold it to buy a more expensive NOS dac. It would considerably outperform the Saturn from my experience and British reviews I have read.
Pass X250.5 Bananas Yes, we have no bananas! No bananas today!
Gamut L5 - best solid state and best tube amp comb I use a CJ 350; the L5s are a reasonably difficult load. The CJ gets quite hot after a long listening session but has no trouble driving them as loud as I want. The CJ gets barely warm driving my Spendor S100s to the same volume. My Meridian 605s ...
best vintage or new speaker for MC240 and C-11 Altec Lansing is also a posibility. There is a pair of Tannoy GRFs on ebay now with an opening bid of $4500. Assuming them to be in the shape they appear to be in this is quite a good deal in MHO. GRF stands for Guy R. Fountain, who was head of Ta...
best vintage or new speaker for MC240 and C-11 Look for a system that is fairly efficient and that does not require a high damping factor. Tannoy, Klipsch, or Spendor would all be good in different ways. A classic Bozak system can sometimes be found, more likely on ebay or Craigs list than her... |
