Subwoover and Quad L-Series Speaker comb. help
I would use REL , which will reinforce the low end without affecting the rest of the range. Which model will depend on your budget and how much bass you want.
Replacing the stock jumpers on my B&W's
Mapleshade makes some flat jumpers that are available in custom lengths and are reasonable in price , look at their web site.
Help this budding Classical audiophile
Look at the web site for Berkshire Record Outlet. They have a wide selection of classical at very good prices. Harmonia Mundi is almost always excellent, They have many other labels , like Astree that are not well known but very good. Prices often...
Best Orchestral Film Scores
Any of Bernard Hermann's film scores, Glory, Patton, Willow , The Right Stuff. Victory At Sea by Richard Rogers for the TV series. I liked Dimitri Tiomkin's westerns. Morriconi ( wrong spelling) for Eastwood's spaghetti westerns. Virgil Thomson's ...
What's the 'ideal' room size?
If you really want it to sound good use the "live end dead end" approach by covering one third of the wall and ceiling length with absorbent material. I would not make the room smaller. Stan
I need speakers for HT/2CH $1500...help
It is wide open , I would look at used large speakers which can generate a sufficiently high level of sound for HT but also sound good. Older speakers like early B&W 801's might fall into your budget range. There are so many possibilities that...
Newby question on watts...
I was a Hafler dealer in the days when the 220 was current, it was a good amp but is now dated. Tube amps have the transformers to couple to the speakers so they are not as sensitive to load impedance as transistors are. The bottom line is how it ...
Turntable comments and recommendations, please
What they said. What you said you are looking for is a apt description of the VPI sound. Why change systems when you can get much more out of what you have? Stan.
downsizing, anyone recommend speakers 1000 or less
Castle Conway's, also at Audio Advisor. price is about $1000 , was $2000. Thin floor standing. Very well reviewed in Hi Fi Choice and elsewhere( Hi Fi News I believe) and , I think , good looking. Stan
Newby question on watts...
Transformers , which tube amps have and transistors don't. There is a general correlation between weight and quality/cost. The heavier the better. In tube amps weight is inescapable . In transistors it is desirable because it indicates bigger heat...
vertical tracking angle
This may not be a problem. The important thing was stylus rake angle, which was usually not optimum with the arm level. I almost always run my arm lower at the pivot because it sounds better to me. Try it and see what you think. Stan
Need a smaller, efficient floorstander
Look at the Castle Conway, it is being sold for $1000 (50% off) by Audio Advisor. It is good looking and highly reviewed. Stan
odd binding posts won't fit spade or banana do i
The obvious answer for why high end cables come terminated is that you can charge more for them and they are more convenient .Also sexier looking. The simple truth about spades and bananas is that nothing sounds as good as nothing. Requiring the s...
Are vintage speakers really that good?
You can get some excellent deals on some older speakers, it depends on what they are. The price of many current speakers are , frankly , a joke. But when you go back beyond the early 70s you will be in an era where the treble on most are not compe...
A DIY tube amp with a little power, any ideas?
You could try to find an old Dyna and upgrade the parts, they had a very good circuit.. Or try looking at kits from England , they are typically on more of a budget than in this country. Make sure that they are avil. for 120/60. Lux use to make so...
