General question on Carbon fiber tonearms versus aluminum
@cleeds Thanks for pointing that out.  The Dolby equalization curve concept is no different than the RIAA concept we all live with when we play vinyl.  There is a Dolby pre-equalization of the music and a post equalization when playing, which redu...
Seen the news about Peachtree and Bluesound partnership?
@gjrad The problems I had with BlueSound and Roon was over WiFi.  The two Node2's and Vault 2's had a lot of problems with Roon, to the point where the Roon acknowledged the problem as well as BlueSound.  When BS came out with the Node2i, they dro...
General question on Carbon fiber tonearms versus aluminum
This has been a very interesting and enlightening post.  Earlier when I made a comment about bicycle frames, a lot of what was mentioned in this post echo's what folks have found comparing frames made of steel, aluminum, and carbon fiber.   Grante...
General question on Carbon fiber tonearms versus aluminum
@slaw Why would one material sound better with MC cartridges than MM?   @testpilot Agreed, although  I was thinking more in general terms.  That is, it could be easier to make a better sounding tonearm with CF than AL.  Clearly, it is that way wit...
Nordost Sort Fut supporting audio rack: does it work?
I haven't used them so take this comment with a grain of salt.   As an engineer I don't follow their logic on their webpage.   They might work just fine but I don't see it.   If you buy them, make sure you can return them if you are not satisfied....
iPhone/iPad good as a source, or get a streamer?
I have always considered phones to be mid fi at best.   The fact is, most folks who use their phones to stream music are streaming mpg or AAC files, so high end is just not a question.
Seen the news about Peachtree and Bluesound partnership?
Hopefully, the new Bluesound stuff will stream better than what they currently have.   I have had so many problems with the three I own, I am now looking for new Roon Endpoints.  Streaming AAC files are okay but streaming hi res WAV files or FLAC ...
Replaced my Ortofon Blue stylus today via plug and play swap in seconds
Not all MM cartridges have a user replaceable stylus.  My Grado Sonata does not and neither do the upper end cartridges from them.   I don't know why, other than they want you to buy a new cartridge when it wears out.   There are many others, too ...
Craigslist Fraud
Speaking of Cashiers checks, do watch the movie "Catch Me If You Can"  It is a true story and do watch the bonus features afterwards, too!
Ayre DX-7 CD / DVD - Need laser head replaced - anyone know who I can pay to help me?
Good luck with that one, you will have to start searching on the web and maybe, just maybe, you will find a shop with one in stock.   For the most part, when a CD player goes bad, it is time to buy a new one as servicing one is pretty much impossi...
CD vs Phono Volume
Millercarbon is correct, but you do have options.   One option is building a small box with a volume control pot and a couple of RCA jacks in it and plug it into the tape loop circuit of the preamp.   Tweak it to match the CD volume, then hit the ...
Electrovoice Duchess IV in California
I found a pair of KLH speakers sitting on the curb not far from my house with a sign that said, FREE.  I snagged them and fired them up.   Yeah, they worked but they sounded as if the singers were in a deep well and just getting over a bad sinus c...
Strange thing happened ...
I have had the same problem in the past, too.   Those little clips loose tension and sooner or later you will need to tighten them.
Turn Table Cable Length
I have a Grado Sonata 2, the one with the wooden body.   I see they have a Sonata 3 out now, which is identical in appearance.   In general though, all Grados are fairly insensitive to cable capacitance.   I don't know at what they upper limit is ...
API Power Wedge 112
You need to worry about digital noise far, far more than AC Main voltage as it changes a lot from hour to hour.   I am not sure what the thinking is for a higher line voltage, since it is limited to VA by the transformer and you can't get somethin...
