Yes it needs to be machined to very exact tolerances...or many extra made and then hand selected for 'fit'.

Yes it is a screw...if memory serves (it has been several years since I had mine apart) the very tip of the screw is machined smooth to form a pin that extends into a vertical slot in the inner piston. Maybe I forgot the detail. Anyway mine is too...
