Why do Tube Amps sound more romantic v SS amps
Talk about beating a dead horse. How many discussions have there been between solid state vs. tubes. Belt vs. direct drive. Moving coil vs. moving iron. There are no hard fast rules. It all depends on the design and build quality. And personal pr...
Do You Tell Others How Much You Have Invested in Your System?
Very true. I have seen $20K+ speakers a foot from a wall in a maybe 10'X15' room with all expensive tube electronics and it sounded like all bass, overwhelming all the instruments. Fed by over a $20K multi-arm turntable. What a waste of $$. Who kn...
What selections do you play when showing off your system to others?
Any original Mofi UHQR if they like any of those albums. Otherwise something they name that I have.
Do You Tell Others How Much You Have Invested in Your System?
If anyone asks, I will tell them. Usually it's about a specific component or accessory. They rarely do.
Do You Tell Others How Much You Have Invested in Your System?
I keep it on a spreadsheet so I remember what I paid (and the current list price) in case I didn't get a receipt. and so I know it if I end up selling it or trading it in. I don't keep track of stuff I've gotten rid of and how that "investment" pe...
5 Dumb Things Audiophiles Believes.
I liked it and thought it rang true. Glad I didn't listen to those who said it was a waste of time. I wonder if they watched the whole 10 minutes. How can you argue about speaker placement, etc.? Just because he looks weird to you doesn't mean he ...
Nearly all manufacturers do not advertise/exhibit their product measurements? Why?
Specs are meant for appliances. Look to Consumer Reports for reviews. They should be used as a guideline at best and viewed with a critical eye because specs can be measured under different conditions that may not even be mentioned.
Considering Towers in the $3000 range
KEF R5. Great all around speaker with plenty of bass. The dealer told me about the extra foam pieces that can optionally be inserted to reduce the bass!   I put them on top of platforms (because of a suspended hardwood floor) to remove internal v...
The Beatles Revolver
Of course the goal is to make money. So what? If someone wants yet another incarnation of some Beatles stuff - great. I have the Mofi Beatles collection with every US release (at least that's how it was sold) and it sounds great to me. I did suppl...
Roger Waters Live Last Night in Glendale,AZ
He obviously has unpopular opinions which I disagree with, and it costs him big time. I sam him a couple months ago and was able to get excellent seats for a very reasonable price. I don't think it was close to a sell out. If he kept his mouth shu...
Record collecting versus hoarding
@lewm - depends on what you consider unplayable. If it just doesn't sound good, I still will play it. Luckily I don't have any I consider unplayable, but have a few that I would buy if reissued or available new. The rest will stay, unless they are...
Record collecting versus hoarding
Agree Lew. The only problem is there are some records I really like that sound crappy that have never been reissued, and I refuse to pay Better Records prices, so unfortunately, they are in the rotation. Luckily there are not too many of these.
Record collecting versus hoarding
@lewm - i meant that listening to any records not worthy of being in my rotation takes away from those in the rotation. The heavy rotation is just that the artists with more titles get played more since all titles are theoretically played equally....
Record collecting versus hoarding
@lewm - I am always looking for new ones to add, it's just hard to find ones that I like that are available on vinyl. And yes, If I play one of my "non-rotation" records (Michael Jackson, etc.), I do remember what I liked about it, and why it is n...
Record collecting versus hoarding
@td_dayton - sounds like you are a dealer. There must be hundreds of records you never listen to. Would you or would others consider an audiophile?
