When are speakers considered Hi-Fi and not Mid-Fi???
Stupid argument. Who cares what anyone says. I think it is fair to day what is garbage though. You know it when you see it. Crosley anyone? The Best Buy haters should differentiate between ones that have a Magnolia department and ones that lump w...
...submitted for your...
I guess it's a good history lesson for newcomers. I thought you could get an entry level integrated amp with a streamer and a pair of speakers and decent speaker cables for a couple grand (or maybe less). Am I wrong? Most people think that is exho...
Turntable is the most expensive in the chain, do it make sense
Any change to the cartridge/phono stage (I don't need an SUT) or arm will change the sound. If the turntable is well isolated and is of high quality, it shouldn't change the sound. The turntable should not "sound" like anything. The most importan...
Probably a dumb question
Plinius distributor also services/updates their equipment out in California and probably can get or has something with reasonable prices. Nice guy - got me a Plinius remote that broke. They use to be clunky bricks, but the new ones are sleek and b...
How rare is an audiophile
Assuming someone who pays $100-$150 for an Ultra Disc One Step from Mofi or UHQR from Acoustic Sounds is an audiophile (I know there are some collectors and speculators in those groups), the number is significant enough for them to make the invest...
user poll on seperates vs integrated
You didn't mention if your principal source is a turntable or digital. If turntable, definitely make sure your phono stage is separate. I have an AB integrated with SS phono stage. I used to use the amp's phono stage and getting the separate one w...
Are carbon fiber speaker cabinets inherently better than wood or metal ones
@tweak1 - to me the only negative of the open baffle design are their looks. If they are for a dedicated listening room (or man cave/basement) where a physics lab type look is not a big deal they're fine, versus in a den (where my system is) where...
Hidden Gems in Classic Rock Albums
Paul Simon One Trick Pony. Title track, but very unheralded album. I think it's about Art Garfunkel. Doubt he'd admit it though.
Turntable Isolation Journey
+1 Townshend seismic platform. Improved the sound of my Rega P8 as their sales guy said, startlingly. I have a suspended hard wood floor over a crawl space. Interestingly though, the platform actually created footfall problems that previously did...
Are carbon fiber speaker cabinets inherently better than wood or metal ones
Nobody has addressed the more important question I raised. Does the malleability of carbon fiber which enables it to be molded into round or rounded cabinets improve the sound of speakers? Of course room acoustics make a huge difference in achieva...
Is it possible for a high end manufacturer to overprice their goods?
That’s why some of the bigger manufacturers can offer better value in many cases, like KEF, Technics, Ortofon, Rega among others. So long as a high level of QA is in place these are well worth considering, except their very low volume models.
I found audio nirvana....

Are carbon fiber speaker cabinets inherently better than wood or metal ones
Sorry for the typo. Is it simply the characteristics of the material?
Is it possible for a high end manufacturer to overprice their goods?
It is called a halo effect. It creates buzz and if successful, increases sales of their lower end lines. A loss leader, unless maybe it is a tiny company hoping for a couple home runs. Rega makes a $40K turntable and KEF makes $230K speakers. Te...
