What interesting or unusual gear has passed though your system during your audio life?
@mkgus  I also had NEW DCA-66! Recently sold mine to a guy who was going to refurbish. I had issues with the charging system, can't recall the exact issue, want to think it was diode issue. Mine was making strange sounds when I had the issue, scre...
What song have you played the most?
If I only get to pick one, Strawbs-Witchwood. I've always been completely absorbed in British folk rock, play something from this genre nearly every listening session.
Observation: Passion vs Obsession
Took me nearly thirty years of obsessive attention to detail in building various systems invariably ending in dissatisfaction to get to passion mode. For me it was a process of learning what I didn't like as much as what I did like. Only after hav...
Are Pre-Amps necessary?
@atmasphere  I only meant straight wire comment as a theoretical. I've long found my active pre's superior to passives and dac direct. Bass, impact, as you mentioned, much superior with the two actives I've owned.
Network Switches
@david_ten  Cable modem supplied by cable company placement near audio system> Audioquest Vodka ethernet> Netgear Nighthawk router powered by 12v 4a lps plugged into BPT 3.5 sig (modded) via DIY Helix with three strands VH Audio Airlock hot ...
Are Pre-Amps necessary?
This thread goes to show you many paths to audio satisfaction. Passives, actives, no pre, resistor based, pots, transformer coupled; seems all have their adherents. It makes sense no pre would be most transparent, resolving, the straight wire conc...
Network Switches
Speaking of no absolutes, I'm done for time being with adding network switch. In the end, Renolab switch result in diminished sound quality. Without switch, images and sound stage wonderfully dimensional and life sized. With added switch, while th...
Supply chain affecting anyone?
Labor shortages could be alleviated by immigrant labor supply, doubt that'll happen much anywhere. Look at Great Britain, brexit brought about truck driver shortages, only made it more difficult for immigrant labor. Seems to me someone needs to wo...
Supply chain affecting anyone?
I'm lucky in that my system is pretty much set, although I did order some Psvane tubes last week, still waiting on shipping date. The one thing I don't hear anyone anywhere talking about is demographics. Did they forget about the baby boom generat...
In praise of isolation.
Try hanging everything from the ceiling. Assuming you have strength from ceiling mounting, every piece of equipment may benefit. Previously, did this with cd players, amazing! I've heard of people hanging speakers with great results, TT's? I'd  tr...
How much does power amplifier really matter comparing to other hi-fi components?
I've never built any system in nearly thirty years with a set percentage of budget for any particular element in chain. I've always started out with amp/loudspeaker as package deal, whatever loudspeaker I started out with required certain type of...
Western Electric or Takatsuki 300Bs?
@jaytor  I have seen a few instances of Takatsuki failure over the years, not really enough to concern me greatly. Don't recall any instances of WE failure. I do agree warranty of great importance, but this dependent upon how hard tube run in any ...
Tonearm adjustments on the fly
As mentioned earlier, Easy VTA with my Jelco TK850L, I also have Pete Riggle VTA setup with Origin Live modded Rega.tonearm on another table.
What do audiophiles do in their cars?
Couple times a year love to take out highly modified (just as my home stereo equipment) 2011 Mustang GT vert, top down listening to streams through Ifi IDSD signature and highly modded car system. This in no way approaches home listening, noise fl...
Western Electric or Takatsuki 300Bs?
Well, it did come down to Takasuki and Psvane Acme for me. I'm sure I've seen more consistently good reviews of Takasuki vs. the reissued WE
