Dave Brubeck-Take Five
I got out my CBS/Sony Japanese pressing (which I forgot that I had)and there is no mention in the English notes on the back of the jacket. So, I had to listen for the first time in guess how long. No laughter, but real drums on vinyl are great. I ...
Sparking Ground Wire
Although ground rods are not a bad idea, many (I would say most, but I don't really know the statistics) local codes allow grounding to the copper water supply pipe. Many feet of copper tubing 3 - 4 ft under ground certainly contacts more earth th...
1955-2001 Favorite Top Ten Rock Groups
All good picks. Nobody included Jefferson Airplane! Saw a genre compilation CD the other day - don't remember the particulars, but included New Riders of the Purple Sage doing Panama Red?
Tube vs. Solid State for Dummies?
You are developing your own theory and it's "not quite right." Best suggestion is to look into some books as recommended. Power is not "produced" in the output stages per se - the output devices "control" the power produced by the power supply fro...
Bela Fleck and the Flecktones
If you like the more "classical grass", I just picked up Uncommon Ritual (Fleck, Meyer, Marshall) on Sony Classical. Claims 20 bit processing - may be dithered down - doesn't say. Hi Snooky.
Patricia Barber and Stereophile
Snook2 - your phase is inverted.
Remote Passive Preamp
How about the Belles GR8 as as currently offered in classifieds?
Old Timers Advice Required
OK, I can't resist. I purchased an Apt preamp and amp early enough that the manuals were still in preliminary form - I received final versions later. I still have the preamp, but it had been in its box for 15+/- years until a couple of weeks ago. ...
Double boxing?
This is a service offered (and, of course) recommended by Mailboxes Etc. for one. I don't know about others. They make some more money, but I believe it is a valid precaution and in their best interest (damage claims) and yours (disappointment).
Question on "klipping'?
Actually, with balanced push-pull amps (99.9%), clipping occurs in both directions, but that's a minor point. One should also note that speaker impedance varies accross the frequency range, often being lowest in the lower range. Therefore biamping...
110V to 220V Q?
Yes, while most adapters go the other way for foreign travel with US devices, thay have a step up converter - #273-1411 for $31.99 in current catalog. Look at radioshack.com for info.
CD: 100+ Threads, no answers
Still not an answer, but do some reading at tweakaudio.com if you have not already.
Power Distributon - "More Plugs"
Simply add a two- or four outlet box to each line. Technically, one should advise you to have an electrician do it. Don't know what your local code is but it should allow at least 3 or four duplex outlets per line. Also consider what you have conn...
Question on "klipping'?
Clipping occurs when your amp can't provide either sufficient voltage or current to drive your speakers to the desired listening level. A higher impedance load and an amp with lower (internal DC) voltage supply level might tend to run into the vol...
Horrific crackeling at power down...!?!
A temporary work around, of course, is to disconnect your speakers before you power down if you are concerned about damaging them. I am not familiar with how your amp normally deals with changing bias as the voltage bleeds down. Perhaps someone el...
