I second Audiofeil's suggestion on the Quicksilver V4, and will add the suggestion of the Wolcott P220 monos. Both well within your budget expectations if you go with pre-owned. 
Anyone tried pro-audio XLR mike cable in system ?
No - but I used to use 25 ft audio system XLR cable as mic cables (Audio Magic Presto II), on expensive mics, for exactly the reasons you stated.

Emorrisiv-The "Savitri" with Janet Baker. One of my favorites! Not only is it a wonderful performance, it is one of my go to recordings for testing a systems ability to image properly. I love the Argo "Coronation Anthems" too. Outstanding choices!!
