Avantgarde or Tonian?
Mapman, semantics yes but over my 40 plus years of listening all I know is that when a system wows me it also fatigues me over time and I end up not listening for either long sessions or at all however when a system lets me forget about the equipm...
Avantgarde or Tonian?
I've heard Avantgardes many a time and they can sound amazing but I can also understand when someone says they sound hi-fi sounding what is meant. They tend to grab your attention and make you take notice and say wow! On the other hand I've owned ...
High quality subwoofer - which one?
I use a single JL Audio Fathom f113 (no external cross-over required) and it's the best I've had or heard. I came from 2 REL Stentors and the bass is now more defined and tighter.(Dealer disclaimer - not for JL though)
Headshell Washers : Nylon or Stainless Steel?
Pryso ~ not as hard as you think. All I did was make sure both screws were tight than replaced one at a time being sure nothing moved, not that hard to do. Then the other. The only difference would be in how much torque was applied, a variable ind...
Defective REL G1 Subwoofers
I've had several RELs and had quality issues.....not going back to a REL again.
Headshell Washers : Nylon or Stainless Steel?
Have been listening to a modified EMT cartridge by Brinkmann with regular screws (SS) and then was sent the matching aluminum screws with titanium washers......wow! I'm shocked at the top end improvement heard, more open and transparent and everyt...
Amp recommendations for Tannoy Canterbury SE
Dover a very good customer of mine uses the Canterbury SE speakers and we have tried the Kondo SPz and he also found it not full bodied and lacked bass control over many other cables he settled on some Purist Audio cables, a much better match.(dea...

Turntable speed accuracy
Was invited to have a listen to 2 audio systems and did bring the Timeline with me just to see how other tables faired. The first was a modified Technics SP10 MKII (I believe) with the plinth from Albert Porter and the Timeline did not waiver one ...
Review: New Valve Order SPA II Tube preamp
Lula ~ That can be done with either RCA or XLR terminations that you use in the back with different resistors. NVO sends with each unit a 100 ohm XLR input. The input impedance of the MC stage is set at 1000 ohms when shipped. Please feel free to e...
Review: New Valve Order SPA II Tube preamp
Thanks gentleman. Yes this 22 tubes unit from Cyprus has redefined my thoughts on phono pre-amps. It actaully has blown away my Kondo M-7 stand alone phono unit that retails for almost $30,000! It has now been sold and will never look back.Enjoy a...
Thin Walled Speakers -Tonian, Musical Affairs, etc
As Nonoise stated, both types of designs can work or not work. I've had some pretty well damped and inert speakers I hated. Escalante Freemonts come to mind, they were 650 pounds of speaker that had no life or energy (not saying it was b/c of weig...

Amp recommendations for Tannoy Canterbury SE
Wilfredt ~ there's also more than just watts that goes into the equation. Consider the gain in the pre-amp as a big part of that equation. Using a passive pre may require more watts and using a pre with 20 + of gain (although never heard a pre wit...
Amp recommendations for Tannoy Canterbury SE
My best friend Kwame has Canterbury SE and has used amps in the 25-35 watts with excellent results. Currently using a Thor 30 watt mono-block that has sounded exceptional. Wonderful speaker.
