Denon DL-103 -- Was it a mistake?
Muddy bass could be a sign of excessive feedback from the speaker. You might want to move the TT around a bit to see if the bass improves. Another way to test it is to lower the cart on a record without turning the motor on, than slowly turn up th...
Please help me improve my system - next steps?
Why don't you ask your friend if you can borrow his Brick for a day or two? The only way to know for sure is to try it in your own system.
New Mac Mini vs. old as music server
It depends on how cheap you can get the old mini. The old high end mini is roughly the same as the new low end mini without the new graphics chip. If you can get that for less than say $450, it might be worthwhile.
Step up transformer
I don't know what brands are out there these days. The last time I used a step up was over 20 years ago. Sorry, can't be more helpful here.

How do you train your ears?
The only way I know of is to go to live musical events and listen to real instruments as often as you can.

Audio Research Tube AMP Reliability
I can't speak for the newer amps but I used to own a SP-6A in the late 70s for many years and had never had any problem with it. I also have friends who used to own different early model ARC tube preamps and none of them experienced any major prob...
Are There Any Good, High Power Solid State Amps?
How much power are you looking for? Are you still using the Von Schweikert VR 4 Gen III?
Recommendations for a "mid-fi" digital coax cable?
You don't need to spend $150 on a digital cable. Any one sold by Benchmark Media will do. You can find them from this linkhttp://www.benchmarkmedia.com/catalog/cables-c-44.html
Is a VPI better then a $10 Clothing Steam Iron?
Very interesting and thanks for the post. I think I am going to try it myself. Now, maybe VPI will come up with a new steam cleaning machine.

WAV or Apple Lossless Encoder?
Peter, You have good ears. I have been ripping to Apple Lossless for a few years and I always thought they sounded the same as WAV or AIFF. But a few months ago I experimented something similar to what you did. I ripped some CDs to AIFF using iTun...
