Advice for music outdoors
I use B&W speakers and a Russound amp for in house and outside - see my virtual system for details. I have keypads all over the house and these carry infra red to the all the components in the control room. All works seamlessly and good qualit...
My Martin Logan SL3's are warped, what should I do?
The curved shape is supposed to help cope with the beaming issues that you always get from large flat panel speakers; the curved shape will help produce a more natural (dispersed) soundfield, particularly noticable in the higher frequencies.
Speaker disappearing act?
get the timbre right and all else is unimportant. gotta have that timbre ! I agree with the last part of this statement. Correct timbre is a much higher priority than a disappearing speaker. However, I am not sure that everything other than timbr...
Speaker disappearing act?
Most audiophiles mean "speaker disappearing" in a virtual sense, however, as I will explain, there is actually a way to make speakers REALLY disappear. If you are interested to learn how to do this then read on...The sense you have of speaker loca...
12" 45 RPM records: What's the story?
Onhwy61,Thanks that was interesting. I assume the vinyl details are accurate, although the bit about CD or DVD compared to analog was completely incorrect. (The author is comparing raw analog signals and the raw analog output of CD or DVD very pre...
Merlin VSM-mm's a good value at $3000 used?
2nd and 3rd harmonic distortion will cause bass to sound overy full, ill-defined and in extreme cases, wooley, mushy or fuzzy. In the mid-bass/ mid-range mild distortion can sound “warm and full” but at higher distortion, it can sound like a guit...
Merlin VSM-mm's a good value at $3000 used?
Gregm and Swampwalker,Sorry I was unclear. Hearing sensitivity rises very rapdily from 20 Hz to 100 Hz. The slope is roughly 24 DB/Octave. This means a fundamental note at 20Hz and its third order (80 Hz) harmonic will sound equally loud when the ...
What speaker to buy to start over.
Staring all over again...huh? You have pre-selected Martin Logan Summits? Didn't you have Martin Logans before? I wouldn't call that a fresh start.I second Bob's comment...at least give some active speakers an audition. You might be surprised by w...
Merlin VSM-mm's a good value at $3000 used?
Most of the speakers in this price range are 3 to 5 ways, so it seems hard to believe that a simple 2-way can reproduce the full-range of the larger speakers. I believe the 6.5" Scanspeak 8545 driver has a lin Xmax of +/6.5 mm. This is in the upp...
What is very good imaging and soundstage exactly.
Any place between the speakers depending on the recording. Depth of the sound varies from a few feet in front of speakers to much further away (generally room ambience from the recording and loss of highs tend to affect distance perception). Rarel...
Anyone else experiencing the rude highend retailer
If you go to a fine restaurant, jeweller, clothing store or car dealership then you will often meet this same behaviour. The arrogance is intended to pass the message that "we are highly discriminating and what we offer is the finest you can find"...

TSM-MM not loud enough ...
You cannot rightly expect high volume levels from such a small speaker. Certainly the VSM's will go about 6 db louder. Will this be enough for what you desire? Only you can be the judge of that.
bass traps..which wall first
I think Ngjockey is just pointing out that you can't expect too much (if anything) from broadband bass traps (foam or otherwise) below 100Hz unless you increase your coverage/thickness significantly.
auralex subdude...can i use this with Rel Storm3?
I agree with Sean, generally the corner is the worst placement for a sub as it fully excites three room modes (often the most lumpy response you can get)...it is the best placement ,however, if you only want to maximize your LF response. The placem...
