Why are we so passive?
Undertow has added some good points. For example, an active speaker allows the designer to control phase more precisely. Actives have less compromise than passive crossovers; less trade offs in power loss on passive elements, keeping phase changes...
What do BBC studios use for speaker cables
BBC are not known for paying big bucks for speakers or equipment. Many of the successful BBC designs like the Rogers were in fact very economical (low cost) speakers that sounded very good. I doubt BBC would use special cables, as large companies ...
Ferrite Cores for Power cords
These devices act as a choke (filter out higher frequencies that may be picked up as a cable acts like an antenna). Generally these should not be required on a power cord or speaker cable as impedances are very low (unless you have a radio operato...
PMC IB1's close to rear wall, is this O.K.?
If I recall bass goes like this Spendor - Harbeth - PMC - Proac in increasing order. ATC is actually regarded as bass lean by most people compared to "average" consumer speakers that tend to be a little bass heavy (bass sells).
Why are we so passive?
{Genelec Actives} Do they compare with my Cerious Ceramic speakers and Atma-sphere OTL tube amps? No. I bet they don't. Two very different sounds. Both are good but serve a different purpose. Active speakers are definitely not for everyone.
active professional monitors for HT
It feels like you are there. That's the whole idea!
Why are we so passive?
Really? alot of musicians don't know crap about good sound. Just look at all the photos of "artists" with the Yamaha NS-10's in the background... yeah like that's some kind of "reference" Funny you should mention these. The NS-10's have almost a c...
Queen song question?
I have a modest Queen collection. I have no problem at all. I use ATC SCM 100A and an SCM active 0.1/15 sub. These speakers can practically make you deaf if you so desire. Very few consumer speakers play loud enough or dynamically enough with low ...
Would you get ASC Tube Traps or RealTraps
shadorne, thanks for the info. I had forgotten about the GIK! Do you know if the Tri traps work as well as Realtraps? I don't think there is much difference. It is the volume of treatment that matters most in corner broadband absorption. 4 inches ...
What songs do you never get tired of?
Well I may be a little nostaglic...or perhaps my Mom dropped me on my head when I was five but this always rasies the hair on my neck. Some deep seated childhood dream thing I guess....the good guys slaying monsters from the id perhaps?.. technolo...
Why are we so passive?
There is nothing wrong with passive. You can get very good sound from passive speakers. Although active speakers often sound better where both options are available and direct comparisons can be made. Active speakers allow for a greater degree of ...
Would you get ASC Tube Traps or RealTraps
Take a look at GIK Acoustics Tri-traps or Real Traps "stands". Either of these may be both the ticket to WAF aesthetics and broadband absorption....frankly I don't like the awkward look of 4 inch panels straddling the corners either.See my virtual...
PMC IB1's close to rear wall, is this O.K.?
I don't have either of these speakers. However, assuming that by "Proac rear porting issues" you mean too much bass boost between 80 and 100 Hz then this will be an improvement; the IB1 is much flatter in the overall bass than the Proacs, which sh...
Would you get ASC Tube Traps or RealTraps
I'd go for broadband absorbers like RealTraps. Tube traps are frequency specific (tuned) and unless you are an acoustician you may end up with making things sound worse. Broadband absorbers installed across corners improve things 99% of the time -...
Media Center for MP3 and DVD´s
I think a DVD megachanger is not really worth it. DVD menus are painful and slow...I can't imagine making a "playlist" frm movies or concerts - therefore it is very little effort to open the jewel case and load the DVD into the player (after all a...
