2 10" subs equals 1 12" or 15" sub?
But only if they have the same motor. Long-throw sub-woofer motors have xmax exceeding 20mm one-way; while 6-8" woofers often go only 5mm so it can be more like one 15" sub matches the output of 24 6" woofers. Absolutely agree...big is better! big...
Current Trends in multi thousand dollar speakers
Agreed - I would add that higher impedance also almost always results in lower distortion in power amps.
Kharma FE 3.2 - be careful, space crucial
It's not really that surprising that a two way speaker cannot fill a 5,000+ cubic foot space with sound. Yeah that was kind of my point too. I did not want to quite put it as bluntly as you have done but this is what I suspect may be the problem....
2 10" subs equals 1 12" or 15" sub?
Each sub will add around 6 db SPL. All things equal, which is rarely the case (same excursion, box size, placement, amp power etc).A 12" sub is around 40% more surface area than a 10" and a 15" is just over 100% more or double. So more or less two...
Why do amps sound different?
Kurt,I like your wine example. In amplifiers, it is TIM, IMD and high order odd harmonics that can make it sound "corked" even if the distortion levels are extremely small - would you agree? Perhaps there are other "contaminants" that in extremely...
Kharma FE 3.2 - be careful, space crucial
the soundstage is just too low and small and sounds strained at high volumes. I don't doubt you are using premium quality amplification in which case either1) You may need a sub - to fill out the LF.2) The midrange and tweeter are compressing som...
Wilson Sophia 2: grills on or off ?
In my system the difference is quite substantial. There is more detail and air with the grills taken off. That is an unusual observation - the normal effect of edge diffraction is a "claustrophobic" or "cluttered sound" - the sound also becomes m...
Very Compact Subwoofer
Are you looking for PC speakers - this is extremely small for a sub?PSB-HD10 (HT sound)Energy ESW-8 (HT Sound)NHT-SOO (more musical - pro sound - less boomy harmonics that most people are so used to with subwoofers or if you are technical the grou...
concrete slab vs/ wood floor - pros and cons
No problems with concrete slab. Concrete slab and brick walls can be a bit much (excessively boomy) but (wood frame with thin stucco layer) should leak out enough bass energy that is does not matter. You should put thick carpet with underlay to de...
Why do amps sound different?
Generally if there is an audible difference then a difference can be measured. Specifications are however measured under conditions that are not typical of when a power amplifier is used to drive a complex load (speaker).....hence the possibility ...
Wilson Sophia 2: grills on or off ?
Sharp edged baffles are best listened to with the grills on...there will be less edge diffraction. If you like it with grills off then add some quarter round wood so as to make smooth edges.
Stereophile review of Escalante Fremont
Nil & Jkalman - If you like a fuller souding drum recording (rock style) that will make your Watt Puppies/DAL's punch you in the stomach on the kick then try George Benson "On Broadway (live)" from Weekend in LA......probably the best recordin...
Kharma FE 3.2 - be careful, space crucial
Do you listen at realistic orchesttral or rock/jazz big band levels - is that the key (many speakers compress and sound dull at higher levels - even fantastic sounding ones may not be designed for realistic levels in a large space)? You mentioned a...
Best MUSICAL subwoofer for Maxx 2's quality sound?
I agree with Cytocycle - it is best to stick to the same manufacturer for sub and main speakers - that is what I have done and no regrets.
On the hunt for speakers
Other than being active I struggle to see the connection between these three speakers. IMHO - if you go ATC then the passive SCM20's or SCM19's are the way to go in the mid price range and then active for the three way models. The crossover is alr...
