Bryan Ferry - Boys and Girls SACD -long-
Excellent review. I have the CD of course as I do all the Roxy albums. Since your review is so good I can add nothing to it - except to say that if anyone likes this kind of 80's synth sound slick danceable stuff then I would recommend Duran Duran...
The focus and air lie
Mr Tennis,On second thoughts I guess I must add that I probably listen very differently from most people. I listen to recordings and concentrate on a particular individual instrument and then play it again listening to another. Perhaps this is why...
The focus and air lie
i can listen to music on a radio and get what ever the composer intended as i would on a "high end" stereo system. What? You can't be serious. Do you just listen to melodies then? What about the musicians and conductor and arrangement? I mean bas...
Best recorded rock album.Amused to Death.R.Waters?
Lots of great suggestions. My suggestion would be ACDC - Back in Black - a really solid punchy rock sound.FWIW - there seems to be a common thread among many of the suggestions, so far - Mark Knopfler (Dire Straits), Pink Floyd, Police, Peter Gabr...
The focus and air lie
Undertow, The audiophile curse*** I agree about the Armani purse. Basically many like to say "we all hear differently" Agreed. Many like to stay with anjou pear, definitely The actual truth is we have varying degree's of deafness :-)And of course...
The focus and air lie
In my opinion, when it comes to loudspeakers, those that possess the necessary dynamics and instaneous swings in volume, for example, horns, tend to sound far more agressive, brash, and threadbare than real life, while those that can reproduce th...
The focus and air lie
Ndeslions, To get that focus and air hifi components cheats, it's all in the meds and high meds, a bit less meds, a bit more high meds and you get the details, the air, the focus BUT you loose timbral accuracy, fullness. The technical term is a "s...
U2 reissues
'it works but it sounds awful when turned up loud on a good dynamic system.'I disagree with that comment. Yes you are not alone. U2's great success proves it. Most mastering engineers now agree that pop music requires heavy handed compression to ...
CBS, Nautilus 1/2 speed DIGITALLY mastered LPs
I don't know about the CBS stuff but Vlado Meller has a reputation for squashing music with compressors/limiters. I have a fairly good Tower of Power album done by him (still squashed but not totally destroyed) whilst I have some Red Hot Chilli Pe...
U2 reissues
U2 sound was mostly engineered by Steve Lillywhite. This was one of the first bands (apart from Punk rock) to go towards hypercompressed music. It was very successful for U2 - a kind of raw fatiguing unpolished sound that works well in a pub and c...
When is digital going to get the soul of music?
I think Hoover uprights suck. Yeah, Albert, a significant advantage, I know, but a Hoover won't chat and take care of you as you get old.
Good speakers at low volume?
Harbeths sound great at low volumes - crytsal clear vocals and warmth. They are used in BBC for drama productions etc - great clarity in the midrange without cranking it and enough bass that it won't sound thin at low levels.
When is digital going to get the soul of music?
Sound is inherently analog, but the recoding and playback process for both analog and digital each face distinct and different challenges that must be met to reproduce this accurately.Exactly. And for that reason it makes sense to say you prefer ...
When is digital going to get the soul of music?
Kijanki,The generalizations of 1 bit versus multi-bit are kind of correct - but they make it sound awful - remember most of these DACS are achieving very low distortion levels (way way way lower than your speakers) - even the old multi-bits (and d...
When is digital going to get the soul of music?
It's the best you can do if that is the sound you want, but I would agree with Albert that it will never completely equal or surpass the detail possible with analog source, at least technically on paper. On purely "technical grounds" or "on paper...
