Running DCS Vivladi DIRECT?
George is probably right in this particular case. The Vivaldi performance into a punishing 600 ohms load is about as perfect as I have ever seen. Even a broken watch can be right twice a day ;-)
Is a GREAT turntable under $2000 possible???
Sounds an excessive budget especially given your equipment. For $800 you can do very well.I use a refurbished PL550 TT in burl magnolia veneer with a Denon DL-110 cartridge...check out my systemI wanted vintage FM radio vinyl sound - and it is exac...
"Bookshelf" speakers designed to be placed near the wall behind them?
+1 @desktopguy get sealed box speakers. The roll off on a sealed box is better suited to a wall placement.
If You Like Funk: Check Out Vulfpeck
I have the Brothers Johnson original album bought when it came out. Love The Meters. Not sure what you will like as Vulfpeck is more pop (like Maroon Five) than funk but definitely rooted in funk and a fun listen. If you haven’t heard these bands (...
New KEF Reference 5 speakers
Those Kef are not the last word in resolution (quite British polite in fact) - so I am surprised you find them harsh and bright. What are you using to drive them? I would recommend a warm tube preamp (not lush but warm). Mcintosh or Conrad Johnson....
Dire Straits : what is your favorite pressing?
Brothers in Arms sounded best on the original CD IMHO. Everything since was not as good. The CD has an early digital sound but overall pretty impressive - very dynamic like Supertramp Crime of the Century - really breathes. To this day, Chuck now r...
If You Like Funk: Check Out Vulfpeck
Love the farfisa sound, the Italians got that one right! I like the Farfisa on Dirty Laundry by Don Henley too. Anyone know how to emulate the Farfisa in a Nord 5 Electro for that Dirty Laundry sounD?
How much do I need to spend to get a preamp that sounds better than no preamp?
"Any! active stage/s introduces noise hum and distortions, increase their gain and you increase those as well." Nonsense. I don’t care who said this. Active circuits have long been proven to be less noisy than a simple resistor for proper bufferin...
Whats on your turntable tonight?
Sinatra - Songs for Swinging Lovers. I love Nelson Riddle. Not sure how to describe it but I feel Nelson arranges like Mozart would have done if he were alive and arranging big band jazz/pop. Classic call and repeat phrasing with slight variations.

@enginedr1960Good for you and you are right that for people who don’t get it - well it is their loss - what is your system?
What Matters and What is Nonsense
Before I started reading Audiogon, I was not a tweaker. Since, I have made many tweaks and modifications to my system. At this point I’m confused as to whether all the thousands of dollars spent were worth the investment. Each tweak seems to breed ...
Highly recommend Paragon Sight and Sound in Ann Arbor, MI
Kind of funny video. I get uneasy when women are objectified so blatantly. A speaker is just a hunk of wood and metal that anyone with enough money can buy. A good woman is priceless and can only be had and kept by winning her heart every day.
Dire Straits : what is your favorite pressing?
All relative I guess. The studio box set released a few years ago and made in Germany by Pallas is good. There is another version done later in Czechlosvakia by GZ which is atrociously packaged and dirty - needs thorough clean before even first us...
What's your favorite lyric from a song?
@slaw Reminds me of this gem delivered in a dead pan matter of fact voice by the late great J J Cale,”I can’t swim and I can’t flyI ain’t no fish, I ain’t no bird in the skyI can’t tell if the sun’s gonna shineAnd I don’t know if you’ll ever be mi...
Contemplating DEVORE SPEAKERS (and others)....LONG audition report of many speakers
Nice review. I agree with much of your conclusions. We must have similar tastes.
