Speaker Height - improved bass response.
I am wondering if the baffle, rather than being a complete soffit, could be a large standalone baffle that surrounds the speaker to the floor and then 2 or 3 feet in all other directions. You can build half walls or 3/4 walls and they will still ...
Dynaudio sub with C1's
My concern is that as great as the Rel is it doesn't seem to match up with the Dyn line. Dynaudio make professional products. They make superb drivers. People probably think they cost way too much because one driver looks just like another. The r...
Speaker Height - improved bass response.
See also this interesting interview with Roy Allison about the "Allison Effect". I decided to find out what was going on with loudspeakers and room interaction. I'd had a hint of it while doing some papers at AR. There was an unexplained phenomeno...
Dynaudio sub with C1's
That should work fine. Dynaudio make superb speakers. Their waterfalls are superbly clean and free of resonance - you will indeed need a good sub. The C1 midrange is not quite as perfect as the C4 but given you listen nearfield so I think the C1 w...
New DAC Not a Dramatic Improvement?
BTW - it can indeed be subtle - lets suppose your CDP/DVD, cheap as it is, is working just fine (and why not - people rave about the Sony PS1!!) and say you use a good DAC then you would need to listen extremely carefully on a good system and good...

New DAC Not a Dramatic Improvement?
Thickness in vocals = jitter, IMHO. It is quite possible you have more jitter from your digital out of your CD/DVD player than if you were to use it as is with its analog outs. If you had a Benchmark DAC1 you would not have to worry too much about...
Speaker Height - improved bass response.
Speakers typically have a suckout between 200 and 300 Hz as well as other modal problems. Placing the woofers at a room boundary - as in a down firing sub is one way to deal with the problem. Another approach is to soffit mount the speakers. With ...
Most agreed upon best speaker?
The Yamaha NS10's were a great little speaker because it forced engineers to concentrate on ensuring the midrange sounded good. These were a big advance from the Urei and Westlake, Lansing horns used in the 60's. So I agree with Newbee that there ...
Headphone Amps and Portable/Personal Stereo???
Get a Benchamrk DAC1 - it has an excellent headphone amp and you can feed it any old digital and it should clean up the jitter pretty good. If you like precision, clarity and dynamic sound then the Benchmark is great value - just no bragging right...
Looking for info on headphones
For ipod or computers and stuff with lousy amplfiers (most integrateds) then I find the Sennheiser HD25 Pro works great (low impedance and great dynamics + the cup cuts out external noise so great for hearing detail with only some slight artifacts...
Newbie needs advice for upgrade.
Here is a thought - try to find used Energy Veritas 1.8 (or others but the 1.8's were very good) and then get something like a Bryston 4B ST used to drive them. But watch out the neighbors may complain about the noise...so you had better invite th...
Does speaker toe-in affect reflection points?
Zargon is right - it makes no difference in the reflection point. However, if your speaker has a fall off in response off axis (such as a horn) then the energy being reflected may be lower by as much as 3 to 6 db when toed-in.
Wilson Alexandria V2
FWIW - blowing the resistors is perhaps a good sign. If the output is clean and with ultra low distortion it is quite natural to want to turn it up...and up....and up. It all sounds just so natural and completely effortless. Many speakers just sou...
