Top notch speakers with their own sub Due to room modal issues I think you'll find most SOTA will recommend a separate sub that allows optimal placement. The main advance in the last 10 years has been the wider acceptance of active speakers in the market. Just as multiple drivers allo...
Distortion with certain CD's and players I agree with your analysis. On high quality receivers you should be able to adjust the attenuation on the inputs. Unfortunately you can't on this one. I'd suggest you simply add a good quality passive attenuator in series.
volume vs presence Check your hearing here
volume vs presence Jaffa, Don't worry about your ears (provided you don't exceed half an hour loud).Your amp can dish out more than your speakers can handle IMHO.Your speakers must be pretty good if they sound better when turned up loud. (Most monitor speakers sound...
Great old speakers that are as good as new ones Energy 22 - it was too cheap for it's quality even in 1982 when it came out. In general the ferro fluid can dry up on tweeters and both woofers and tweeters can be damaged from misuse so you buying really old bargains that are no longer supported ...
Converting Power Cords into Speaker Cables? A high amp rated power cord is made of thick AWG wire and will indeed make a good speaker cable. The primary concern with speaker cables is something that makes a good contact at each end and has low resistance. Some power cables may be a bit too ...
Speaker upgrade help? So you're contention is I'm just smoking the coils a bit? Yes in teh majority of consumer designs:When the woofers have large excursion they lose linearity and oomph because the coil sees a lower magnetic field. When they get hot (typicaly around ...

Speaker upgrade help? I occasionally indulge in loud sessions and it doesn't sound like clipping when the image starts to flatten out This a common complaint with nearly all speakers targetted at consumers. You might research speakers with pro type drivers such as some...
It is all about the ‘Room’, thinks Toole. I read this about a year ago. I found it rambled a bit but there is some excellent advice in it. FWIW: I have invested rougly half of my money on room acoustics. I find it very odd that audiophiles pretend to be serious about sound quality to the ...
jazz/blues piano players Janette Mason - if like a very technical pianist with blues/jazz and a funky twist. Janette makes it very clear that the Piano is a "percussion" instrument....
ATC scm 7,11,19 best position? I prefer no toe-in - just straight ahead provided you are 3 to 4 feet from side walls (otherwise an aggressive toe in may be needed to reduce unwanted reflections)
ATC scm 7,11,19 best position? Since the woofer/mid runs up to around 3 KHz on the 19 I'd suggest keeping this driver at ear level and away from reflective surfaces if you can (they work best on a stand).
Tired of HT HT Hoax is only a hoax if you expect to get the same two channel sound (when playing just two channels) from a similarly priced HT system as you get if you poured ALL your money simply into Source pre-amp amp and two speakers. This fact is self evi...
Step Up/Down Transformers - Good or Bad? No major issues with amps. You must get a large enough transformer however or you will suffer. For a Power Amp expect a transformer to be roughly the size of a 5 Lb bag of sugar. |
