Wadia verses Meridian verses a Digital Server
Get a DAC1 from a guitar or pro music store on loaner and check it out. If you don' t hear an improvement take it back and you haven't spent a dime. Jitter is a funny thing and so hard to say whether what you already have is good enough. (FWIW you...
cd/dvd player with digital remote volume control
Agree with Casouza this is not the right way to go for maximum quality. It may work well enough on compressed pop but on a great recording you are likely to lose detail and dynamic range. I'd suggest an analog preamp with remote between you Apogee...
Benchmark DAC1 USB w/ Focal XS - observations
Good for you. Computer audio and in particular USB can be a minefield for problems. The Head-fi forums about Benchmark DAC1 makes this very clear (not everything is "bit transparent") - some version of iTunes are best avoided.
any early 80's alt/soft punk fans out there?
Siouxsie & the BansheesBilly IdolThe FixxJanie Lane's cover of "I want you to want me" is really cool.
Acoustic resonators in place of room treatment
That a resonating cup will make a sound like a wine glass or a bowl there is no doubt. Why you want more ringing I am not too sure. I spend much time trying to get rid of spurious resonant sounds that are not related to the music. The large fins on ...
one large cap, or a few added up?
I'd suggest to use several of the same Capacitors from the same batch and match values as closely as you can. Probably the most important will be to choose something fairly musical and yet reassonably priced and long lasting such as Ansar Supersou...
RIP J Gordon Holt
RIP Gordon Holt. Sadly he also predicted the end of this hobby which will probably die along with the boomer generation."Somewhere along the line we lost track of what audio is all about: the reproduction of music."and It seems, these days, that m...

maybe Construction Time That is my favorite Depeche Mode album.Once again the Extended 12" Version of "Everything Counts" is killer compared to the album version - they were nice enough t oinclude this on the CD.Yaz and Ultravox and Tears for Fea...
any early 80's alt/soft punk fans out there?
I have a ton of the original extended 12 inches re-issued to CD of many of these. It has taken a huge effort to find them as they are often only available on certain rare compilation CD's. My preference, by far, for this entire 80's period are the...
bi-amping and effect on cross over
They might be using a series crossover design. This woudl explain why they don't allow biamping.
How important are the Speaker Cabinets?
Shadorne, why limit it to just what can be seen? Better it's what the audiophile knows is what they hear. Yes absolutely. What I meant to say was that when an buyer sees the product and knows who makes it then he/she becomes influenced by all the...
How important are the Speaker Cabinets?
Shadorne, the article does not prove that looks are more important than sound quality Well the way I read how the selection process went blind versus sighted (choice is so utterly dependent on visual cues even though they were instructed to rate ...
question about speaker placement. dead end room?
How is that book, I was thinking of getting it?Is it an easy, enjoyable read or is it a more technical reference book?Rich It is an easy read but he tends to ramble on. I don't find it to be very well organized but it is full of gems.Flyde Toole ...
Blu-Ray movies
Did not know you can make a movie like Blade Runner to look that good and sound good today. It's really an old movie. If I can remember, isn't Blade Runner is movie with a lot of talking and not so much action? I don't remember there's a lot of a...
cable burn-in / system burn-in
Another factor that can make a real difference that will be audible is your capacitors in your equipment. If you have had your equipment in storage for many many months then some of the capacitors (depending on the design) may need reforming or ma...
