Totem model 1: woofer rubber stiff -- Slight buzz
Rubbing voice coil is your problem. They were probably over-driven. All you can do is re-cone (if there is a kit available) or replace the drivers. $500 for two drivers is cheap - so why not just replace them...
Is this clipping or just high SPL?
Will high end speakers on high end amps all pretty much start to congest at these 100-105 DB ranges? At 2 meters from the speaker - yes absolutely. Soundstage will not even test speakers at 100 db SPL as most would get damaged - see quote below f...
Is this clipping or just high SPL?
As Linkwitz states, in the article I referred to,"the large low frequency voice coil displacements can cause large amounts of intermodulation distortion products near the high frequency signal due to the large low frequency variation of Le(x)." A ...
Is this clipping or just high SPL?
Do you have an SPL meter? How loud was it? If it was above 100 db SPL then you might be "pushing" your speakers too much.See this article Unreasonably large distortion in midrange drivers. You can see that it gets bad above 105 db SPL.The main iss...
Is this clipping or just high SPL?
Are you referring to "Time"?If this is what you are referring to then it is likely you are over-driving the tweeter or midrange or both on your speakers...that track is beautifully clean apart from deliberate distortion on the lead guitar and some...
With $20,000 in your hand, what speaker would you
Looks like Andy bought the vacation plan instead of speakers. Yeah - that was my point - he announces himself as a rabid audiophile launches two threads and then "poof he disappears....
Ripping to Mac OSX
Don't use WAV - you will lose album info...I'd use AIFF or Apple Lossless. Check Benchmark DAC1 wiki guide for iTunes setup (settings for bit transparent playback) and keep checking regularly in case a big crops up with a new iTunes version (you'l...

Andy,What did you buy? Of course, if you are one of the many audiophiles who are happy to solicit some help but prefer not to share anything back then I understand.
Tight accurate midfield monitor pair suggestions
I've not heard them but the design is rather odd (five tweeters) ...weird... a novelty perhaps?
Is this clipping or just high SPL?
Probably distortion somewhere - most likely clipping with the amp. When it sounds either loud or congested at higher SPL but fine at lower levels then it can be either the power amp or the speakers. (speakers do not clip but they rapidly run out o...
Speakers in 10-15K price range for Classical music
ATC SCM 50 Actives will do the trick - there is a used pair for sale in your price range (Gordon Holt's Estate - he also liked classical and Panels). ATC are close to Quad panel midrange clarity yet will still do justice to Mahler or rock.
An honest opinion about upgrading?
Your power amp is not well suited to drive these speakers. S-8 has very low impedance of around 2.5 Ohms. I'd get some serious power if you want more clarity
active speaker system, ideally child friendly
From your perspective, is the KRK/SVS/NHT system worth double the NHT only system? Yes. You could also get some omnimounts for the speakers and connect them to the wall and keep them out of the way. FWIW: A pair of VXT8 might be another way to go...
I have 1500 cds
You will need about 600 Gigabytes if you store them lossless.
New Beatles remasters
The overdub rumor is false Is it?
