advice on projectors and screens
Dave - the auto-iris in the Epson 8350 can be really annoying. This is how they get better contrast and better blacks out of cheaper designs. If you have not opened the box you may want to reconsider.
ATC's - 10's vs 20's
I have not compared directly but ATC design speakers according to a strict engineering philosophy. This means that differences across the entire product range are much smaller than other manufacturers. If you like the 10's then you'll like the 20'...
Apple Lossless vs iTunes Plus
Grege,I have done the same. 256 Kbps with a good compression (like AAC) will not be identified by most people on most music. There will always be exceptions but once you get to 256 of higher then exceptions become vanishingly small.Sadly most do n...
What subwoofers keep up with Quad ESL 57 ?
Try an ATC C4 sub woofer. The ATC's were originally designed to get the low distortion and exceptional quality sound of the Quad 57 midrange but at much much higher SPL's and without the distortion inherent in other conventional designs. ATC sub w...
What Mobile Fidelity lp or cd is your fav ?
I second Crime of the Century (CD)Disagree with Tom Petty Full Moon Fever (CD) - all they did was turn up the treble. The standard CD sounded better balanced, IMHO. Ditto for Tom Petty Damn The Torpedoes (CD) - the new remastered version available...
Great and well-recorded jazz on CD
Sonny Clark - Cool Struttin Second that one. Also "Dave Grusin Homage to Duke"
CD Sound Quality -- please help educate me
This was well before they discovered the deleterious effects of jitter. You would indeed benefit by purchasing a well recommended used player that is not more than 5 years old.Cambridge 540c used (from 2008) would be a good choice but there are man...
What happened to my bass?
I posted this on Ethan Winers forum as well. His response: "Yes, it is probably one or more deep nulls". And he also says to measure the room. A good track to test in room bass response is Rebecca Pidgeon Spanish Harlem. The bass line should stay...
Braiding vs side by side?
I second Tgrisham, good advice Al. Now wouldn't it be nice if Audiogon was organized so that you did not have to answer similar requests every other week?Or is there a deliberate design in the way that Audiogon repeats the same threads endlessly? ...
What happened to my bass?
77jovian,There are several options. Room EQ Wizard (PC) or Fuzzmeasure (MAC) are possible software options. Since you need a microphone and good ones are powered by phantom then you may as well get a E-MU 0202 or some other similar USB box that do...
What happened to my bass?
I can only recommend that you perform some measurements with proper software, sound card and microphone.(Assuming of course that you actually want to understand what is going on, which is not obvious as most people here on Audiogon prefer to muddl...
Likely culprit for harshness at higher volumes?
hat on some CDs, at background listening levels, sound seemed to come mostly from one side or the other. When turning up the volume a bit, I'd then notice additional instruments coming from the other side (mostly some sort of percussive instrumen...
Likely culprit for harshness at higher volumes?
Saru,It is obviously not your choice of music. I doubt it is the amp or preamp. Therefore that leaves speakers or a jittery digital input. One further possibility is your room, if you have tile on the floor and fairly reflective surfaces then this c...
Likely culprit for harshness at higher volumes?
It could be the CD. Many modern CD's are mastered so that they sound harsh. Some genres like rock, pop and heavy metal are badly affected and virtually all recent material (as well as recent remasters of old material) can sound harsh. You may be ov...
advice on projectors and screens
I'd suggest SeymourAV - they have attractively priced acoustically transparent screens. I did plenty of research and for a projector the Panasonic AE4000 was the best I could find (at a reasonable price, Sept 2010). It has great black levels and w...
