Preamp or Not to Preamp?
i can't imagine *any* cd player that would sound better straight-in, then thru a *good* preamp. my brother-in-law has a resolution-audio cd player. it sounded better thru even a reasonably-priced alchemist kraken preamp (retail $1080), than straig...

harmon-kardon made one w/the rabco arm... also, mapleknoll made an *excellent* linear-tracking 'table. doug
Preamp or Not to Preamp?
how does it sound? i'd be surprised if it sounded better straight-in, but you have the equipment; try it both ways & decide for yourself. personally, if ya wanna save some money, i'd bet the preamp w/a much less expensive cd player would sound...

Vinyl vs. CD
hi craig, i have *no* problem w/background noises on my vinyl set-up, and i don't have a super-spendy cartridge either. the ortofon mc25-fl retails at $450, but the needle-doctor sells it (perpetually on sale?) for $225. perhaps your fono-stage wa...

Vinyl vs. CD
hi brian, no, you *dint* misunderstand me - run thru a cary slp98 preamp, there was absolutely *no* difference between the $500 nad cd-changer & the $1700 alchemist nexus cd player on my system, which is as stated previously. (*everything* sou...

hi craig, i respect your point-of-view, & it's true - w/my ~$500 nad cd changer, my digital is far from state of the art. but, i a-b'd my nad w/a $1700 alchemist nexus cd player, on *my* system, and there was *no* difference between the two. m...
Vinyl vs. CD

newbie help with speakers and cd players
thiel's *are* notoriously revealing, but are *not* difficult to system-match. which means that a mid-fi receiver *won't* be the best match for them but, i *still* say thiel 3.5's can't be beat, for $650 if the receiver has enuff grunt. *and* when ...
