Is vinyl dead ?
Albert: Multi-channel "surround" sound. No matter where i go, i can't seem to escape them : ) Sean>
How does power cord affect a digital frontend?
I agree that short of a big power amp being severely choked with a puny cord, digital gear and / or highly advanced preamps seem to be the most sensitive to changes in AC power delivery. I changed power cords on my Philips SACD 1000 and noticed wh...
Is this the best analog has to offer?
You did not mention what you are using as an interconnect between the arm / phono stage and whether or not you have adjusted the loading on the phono stage to best suit your cartridge. Phono systems are very sensitive to the cabling used and the e...
Which basic amps can drive 1 ohm loads ?
I've got what would be a great deal for ya on a modified Sony receiver. I know it will work like gang-busters on those speakers.... : ) Sean>
looking for best isolation platform for CD player
Tom: There are many different approaches to damping / isolation / energy transfer. When one concentrates on a specific approach, all of the benefits can be achieved. At the same time, there is nothing left to counter the drawbacks that any "less t...
looking for best isolation platform for CD player
Tom aka Audiotweak: I'm holding my breath until you respond with your thoughts and comments. Please hurry up as it has already been over 24 hours and i'm well past turning blue in the face. My guess is that you didn't get the answer that you wante...
Equipment found at the dump
Rickmac: That is great that you want to get kids involved in audio. If you've got the time to do something like this, we may all thank you for it later. After all, the more "young un's" that we can recruite at that age, the more likely they are to...
Which basic amps can drive 1 ohm loads ?
I wanted to make note that the use of an output inductor in an amp will LOWER damping factor at higher frequencies. By using a heavier gauge conductor, the effects of this are minimized AND more current can be passed as discussed above. Sean>
Physical explanation of amp's break in?
Aball: "However, I hate to say it but the design uses a given value and not every component is matched when installed in your amp (and it drifts anyway), thereby making burn-in moot for amps and preamps."If i sum up your statement here, it reads a...
looking for best isolation platform for CD player
I sold the Michael Green Deluxe Just-A-Rack two years ago after running it for a couple of months. To my ears, it did horrible things to the sound of the system that i had it in. I would have never believed that a rack could have that much of a "s...
Which basic amps can drive 1 ohm loads ?
Ghostrider: Thanks for the clarification. For some reason, i was thinking that these were quite reactive loads. As far as 1 ohm speakers go, some of the Acoustats ( and possibly other E-stat's ) hit 1 ohm at very high frequencies. I know that my O...
Grounding My Equipment
Aball: By "floating" grounds, i meant that the chassis would be "Earth grounded" but not tied to "signal ground". This provides what is known as a "Faraday shield" or "Faraday cage" and reduces the noise floor of the component. At the same time, s...
Power Cord for Odyssey Stratos
Having never heard a Stratos, i would suggest either one of the cords that Corona designs and markets or one of Michael Wolff's "carbon" designs. Then YOU can tell US how they work : ) Sean>PS... I'm not familiar with the VooDoo products, but C...
Any feedback on the new Wolff PC ?
Michael: I see no problems with bringing other manufacturers into question in terms of UL type acceptance, etc... BUT naming names can be a touchy situation. I've seen some cords that would have NO problems being UL approved and i've seen others t...
Tweeter below mid-woofer
It is "possible" that they could "image higher", but some of that will depend on how the drivers are laid out on the baffle, the spacing between them and what the crossover points are. I looked on PSB's website but found very limited info on these...
