Personal speaker evolution

Achieving audio system synergy
I have Helicon 800's and they do demand high quality upstream components as they are extremely revealing, but after you listen to them for a while other speakers sound like they have wool over them or are missing some of the music. The Helicon ser...
please help with new purchase
I disagree, dime up for a VPI Scout, they are a huge jump up from the Rega sound-wise and they sell quickly used if you decide to upgrade. Setup is a bit more difficult on the VPI but this is a non-issue now that Fremer has a DVD telling you how t...
What don't you like about these speakers?
My opinion only of course, but to me the highs on the Von's are a bit grainy and the bass can be a bit underdamped. The Gallo's are pretty awesome for the money, but the mids can be a little forward on some material, and you need a stout amp to co...
Can you suggest a warm high-end CD player?
I wouldn't call the Ayre cx-7 or cx-5 "warm", more neutral IMHO. I agree with the Capitole, or for something a little more subtle the Electrocompaniet. I owned an EMC-1up for a while and it was a great player, probably the best thing I can say is ...
Best RCA terminated digital interconnect?
I found the Stereovox very good for the money, for less than $100 I would recommend giving it a shot.
Who makes speakers with relaxed high freq.?
I would recommend a pair of Vienna Acoustics Mozarts, not very bright and plenty of bottom end to balance out any room interaction on the highs. Also you could just try a warm amp like a Conrad Johnson, or warm cables like Cardas Golden Cross....t...
Your favorite song from a RECENT cd release?
Maybe Sparrow from Neko Case's new album Fox Confessor bring the Flood...
Jazz at the pawnshop
A nice jazz sampler with great fidelity is the Concord SACD sampler if you have a SACD player.
Low noise tube compliment for an Aesthetix Rhea?
Check the thread on Calypso tubes, I would assume this would apply to the Rhea as well, very similar design. I had great luck in my Calypso with cryo tubes from tubeman.com that were not very expensive compared to some of the alternatives (Amperex...
Which 5.1 ch Pre?
Bel Canto Pre 6 Gen 2, better than any of the options you mentioned IMHO unless you really want the tubes in the Copland.
Aesthetix Calypso -vs- Ayre K-1Xe preamps?
I have demoed the Ayre and owned the Calypso prior to selling it due to system integration with my theater system, (not as bad as you think). First off, they are both awesome preamps, and the Calypso is not "tubey" sounding at all, so the tonal si...
Speakers in the range of $3 to $4.5k per pair?
I posted earlier about the Gallo's and I actually went from them to Dali Helicon 800's, and though I barely had time to get used to the Gallo's, I think I can speak for both. The Dali's are incredible speakers, but are more sensitve to the upstrea...
Outstanding 5.1 pre/pro with comp. video switch'g
I recently went from an Aesthetix Calypso to a Bel Canto Pre/Pro when I integrated my two systems, and it is surprisingly good in 2 channel as well as being superb as a 7.1 processor, and the tft screen, while not necessary is pretty cool and make...
Speaker preference Dali, Audio Physic, Von Swiekrt
I have a pair of Dali Helicon 800's which are the lower sibling to the MS4's and they are exquisite with classical, jazz, and voacls. Female vocals in particular are not chesty and have incredible air and detail with their dome/ribbon tweeter arra...
