CAT amps........Opinions please The CAT JL3 provided some of the finest sound I heard at CES 2005 in the Merlin room. I own an SL1 MkIII preamp, and can say that Ken Stevens of CAT has been most helpful in assisting me with new tubes, etc. IMHO, the CAT products are world class....
Prince or whatever he is known as , Wow His vinyl LPs are excellent, too. Prince's catalog is deep and divers. Most albums include very complex mixes, tons of well-recorded layers, and ridiculously accomplished studio musicians. He's got more in common with Frank Zappa than many would g...
Whats on your turntable tonight? Zaikes,Roland Kirk's The Inflated Tear came out in 1967, selling 10k copies in the first year(pretty big for a jazz LP then). It was his first LP for Atlantic. Check this link for a nice synopsis on his discography:http://www.mp3.com/albums/55944/...
CAT SL-1 phono loading question................... Yes,Carl. Pairs of "loading plugs" connect to the jacks, and each pair changes the loading. A CAT should come with a set of numerous pairs that will allow experimentation and changing the values while an LP is playing. When no jack is connected, I...
CAT SL 1Pre. Need confirmation re: Tube Complement Just ask Ken, it might even be serial#-dependent. Cheers,Spencer
Whats on your turntable tonight? Alex,"The Inflated Tear" is another excellent title by Roland Kirk. Unfortunately, my cheapo reissue is pretty noisy. I keep hoping that somebody does a nice quality reissue of this. The 45rpm treatment would be great on this album. Cheers,Spencer
Have you seen the new R.E.M. reissues? WOW Thanks, you just saved me a bunch of money! Cheers,Spencer

Couple of questions on the Merlin VSM speakers... Budrew,6 feet apart should not be a problem at all. In fact, ideal is only 7ft. apart. 7ft. speakers-to-chair is a little tight, but it should work okay. 9ft. would be much better. Most good speakers will require as much room. Thus I don't know ho...
Acarian - Alon IV vs. Alon V mkII I agree w/most of what's been said. IMHO the IV is a little bottom-heavy, and the V is much better balanced, and with slimmer dimensions, easier to place in most rooms. For a used speaker, they are definitely one of the better values available. Th...
Merlin Owner's... Baddabob,We're not really persistent. We're just happy. I know; you don't see that around here all that often, but with most Merlin owners it's true. For me, buying Merlins was the smartest audio purchase I've made in my 20+ years of this hobby. M...
Best monoblock tube amp with Vandersteen 5A Joule Electra monoblocks at CES made the best sound I've ever heard from andys. Not sure which model, but it might have been the Rite of Passage. Heard some nice vinyl via VPI Scoutmaster, Joule preamp, Elrod cables. One of better rooms at CES, IM...

Turntable, Vinyl help................please At this point, clean records are the next thing to focus on. As Lugnut pointed out, a vauum-based machine would be great. If the cost bothers you, you can start doing them by hand w/disc doctor brushes. I highly recommend the Audio Intelligent Vin...
