Changing to bookshelf speakers. Recommendations?
I do listen to more rock but am not a big fan of "bright" systems nor do I listen at concert levels (but on the louder side from time to time).I will admit, I always have been intrigued with the British manufacturers mentioned (ProAc, Harbeth). Th...
Thiel speakers--can you power them with reciever?
My Sony 5-channel amp rated at 140wpc sounds substantially less punchy and flat in comparison to other good 60-100W audiophile grade amps. Power ratings on AV amps and receivers are often over-rated with higher-end units an exception.
Harbeth SHL5 vs 40.1
Many like the Harbeth sound, some less so:http://www.10audio.com/harbeth_m30.htmIt is interesting the reviewer describes the M30 as having a boxy sound with the enclosure significantly contributing to the overall presentation although Harbeth spea...
How to integrate phase of a subwoofer with mains?
A bit off-topic and this may not contribute to the thread. I find that most musical material differ in bass frequency output. Some albums will have more bass and sound boomy even without the subwoofer integrated into the system(room acoustics affe...
Is Pass Labs Xono An Overkill For Rega P5 TT?
Thanks for the recommendation Tvad. Results can sometimes be unpredictable in that a lower cost phono can outperform a much costlier and reputable unit like the Xono. I guess matching does play a part sometimes. This unit from a Hungarian outfit d...

Is Pass Labs Xono An Overkill For Rega P5 TT?
Thanks for the response Ghostrider45. I am using a Denon DL103 cartridge with the P5 and was informed the cartridge was not optimized since the Rega arm would only come into its own when matched with a heavier one. Anyway I reckon the built-in pho...
Harbeth SHL5 vs 40.1
I have the SHL5 and will be listening to the 40.1 this weekend at my friend's place driven by Leben CS600. If the space is huge I would say the 40.1 is the way to go as the bigger speaker will throw a bigger soundstage and sounds bigger than the S...
Speakers for a 12 x 13 room
Dodgealum made some good points. The Harbeth P3ESR is one little gem that sounds very good and will work well in that space. The C7ES3 will also work but will sound better if given more room to breath. Both will pose little(or none) bass problems ...
Integrated to use as preamp for now?
Rega Brio3, no remote
Toe-in or NOT toe-in ??
If the speaker designer cannot be reached, try experimenting yourself. Only you can find out the results yourself. Bear in mind you may prefer the results when the speakers are toed-in while another might not like it and prefer them pointing strai...
PMC and what electronics ??
Thanks for the thoughts Shadorne. That would make sense.

With all the suggestions he has got so far I reckon it's a complete revamp of the system.
Amplifier Power Ratings & Speaker Sensitivity
The designer for Harbeth, Alan Shaw cannot factually answer the question of the maximum SPL the speakers can handle and has advocated good listening habits in respecting our ears. Harbeth speakers were said to have been designed to sound warm and ...

This is a tough one. Any component can be a weak link in your setup. While one thinks it's the amp and the other reckons the speaker, the third person may say it's the source. I suppose the more important question is which component upgrade will y...
