Help CDP over vinyl upgrade advice please
Thanks for the great feedback. I don't really have the mod capabilities- so that's out. A tube unit may be worth a try.I guess there's a butt for every cushion. The black background of cd is OK, but it needs the rest of the aural scene. Most of my...

Earbud.I dunno- all that comes to mind is some Orson Welles movie ;-)
Best 300b single-ended Tube amp. for the $
I think I may have it here.Recently off ebay I found a Spark/Cayin 300b single ended from about 1997 design , but this appears to have been a model year 2000 unit. I retubed it with a set of VAlvo e188cc vintage and a set of Sylvania 6sn7. The 300...
Any opinions on retubeing W/winged c or mullard re
I also have had poor luck with the Mullard reissues. One of four went bad and then another one of four- all this with less than 100 hrs. I'm using EI fat bottle and they have not had a failure- knock on wood. They sound pretty good too.
Upgrade from Cayin TA-30?
I'm still on my TAD modified ta-30 for going on the third year. I have rolled a few integrated and power amps through just for fun (Sansui au717, Pioneer 980, Bedini 25/25, Denon 2000, also four others I would rather not say as the mfr are a curre...

'reading while listening' that'll make the music sound better I like to listen while reading... it makes the book better too;-)
A decent preamp for Altec 604 speakers
I have the 604 D and have found tubes really sweet with these speakers. While not knowing a SS amp to recommend, I would suggest a nice integrated, maybe like the sli-80. Don't need much power, you could go all the way down to a 7 watt set and sti...
Marantz PM7200 vs. Denon PMA2000IVR
I have not tried the Marantz, but I owned the 2000 for a while. It was quite good, excellent power, and dynamic. I thought the soundstage was rather two dimensional in my system, it would not show details at lower volume levels, and the amp always...
Most neutral, high-resolution 12AU7?
I think it depends on the rest of the circuit. A tube that might be overly bright or even brittle in one circuit can bring another to life.Which direction do you need to go with it? I have really liked several. RCA cleartop side getter is one of m...
Newbie Tubie just wants insight and direction....
""Having "correct" polarity coming off of a tube amp requires YOU inverting the polarity (in other words, either on the amplifier OR on the speaker you have to have + on the - and - on the +)."" I have not heard this, care to elaborate? Or is this...
Question re: Power conditioner
I went back to the store this AM and found I had just missed the Monster 7000. I think it went for about $400. BUT, I did get an AC line analyzer that plugs into the wall socket and allows you to listen for noise and check EMI. (scored this for $2...
TAD 150
I recently recieved the tad150 and have been using it for the last few days or so. It still has very few hours on it, so I am sure will continue to improve further. Last night I was finally able to sit down for some serious listening and am quite ...
TAD-60 vs Prima Luna
rj@sfrr- I am a little curious if you have done a side by side of the ta-30 and the tad-60. I have quite enjoyed the ta-30 and am aware of it's strength and limitations, I just received the tad 150 and have yet to break it in for evaluation, but w...
from solid state to tube
A recent rotation of various speakers through my system has been an eye opener re: power needed and voice in relation to SS vs Tube. A small pair of power hungry monitors can sound excellent with tubes, while the SS amp will cause them to sing wit...
