Psychological effects of volume control
Very interesting.I feel foolish for my previous concerns. The DAC is bringing everything wonderfully to life now that I’ve discovered the proper volume adjustment!Much better in so many ways than the Theta I was using.
Psychological effects of volume control
I think my problem is just getting used to the new parameters.Instead of  “normal” being about 9 o’clock  on the dial, it’s now at 11.Still far below the maximum volume setting.

I can’t nearly afford it anyway.I’ve discovered, to my surprise, that raising the volume control of the amp to unfamiliar levels does not degrade the sound as I thought.I just have to get used to 11 o’clock vs. 9 o’clock on the dial.Happy discovery!

Thank you peterdamroth.  Sorry to hear that.  Im using an Oppo player as transport.  No problem here.
Is it possible to buy a decent tube amplifier in the $2000-3000 range?
Shadorne:Thank you for your input.  A more powerful amp may not be the solution.Recapping the preamp is probably a good idea. It’s one of the things I was considering.

Shadorne:  It seems as though ARC doesn’t make a DAC.I can’t find any. What companies would you suggest looking into?

In a previous post I should have said I’m not a technoCRAT, not technoPHOBE.I probably am the latter.

This thing sounds fantastic in anything other than classical.Great in a lot of classical, too. What a dilemma!

I’ll try that, Bob.I’m not sure what they can do, though

Gdhal and kalali:Forgive my ignorance.  I’m more of a musician than a technophobe.I’m connecting my Oppo player which I use as a transport to the Gungy with an optical cable. I have a vintage Conrad-Johnson preamp which only accepts RCA plugs.  So...

Congrats gdhal!   Enjoy!!Unfortunately, I’ve discovered something unexpected which, for me, is very troubling about the Gungy.Although it’s very clean sounding, warm and precise, the volume output is several decibels softer than my old Theta, and ...

I’m beginning to think I need about 200W per channel, as my 160W monoblocks are not quite doing the job.Maybe the way to go is solid state at the price range I’m looking at ($2000-3000).Any opinions on which way to go?
