My Impossible hum issue.
Are you grounded from your turntable to the stand-alone phono preamp? Do you move the ground back and forth from your stand-alone phono pre to your control preamp? If yes, I would guess a wiring issue in your tonearm.

That should be unconstitutional. There is nothing in the constitution about that. It just gives congress the power to tax and they seem to be very good at doing that.   
What's up with lousy bass on classic rock recordings?
Bass takes up a lot of room on a vinyl record, reducing play time. Digital media doesn't suffer from that issue.

Any tube with an A or B on the tail feathers is not a direct replacement for an earlier tube but a product improvement. Sometimes the new tube can be used and sometimes not and vice-versa.
