power conditioning - source vs amps
If you have everything plugged into the Hydra, then you only need the 1 dedicated line.Rob
power conditioning - source vs amps
My preliminary experience with the Hydra-8 is that it improves upon all the components. My monoblocks are 600 watts, and I think even they improved. They were maybe 1-1.5 decibals louders without the conditioner, but were more coherent and refined...
Thiel 1.6 vs 2.3 vs 3.6
They are all great, and they would all work in your room. The 3.6's are a great value currently, and will likely be replaced by a new model soon. What's your gut feeling after listening to them?Rob
pass x-350 vs x-600
I made the jump, and found it worthwhile. There was an improvement in the whole spectrum, but particularly in the lower frequencies. I am a believer that for large/inefficent speakers, the more power the better. I guess whether it is cost-effectiv...
Speakers for under $10k used?
You might also want to consider bringing down your budget on your speakers so that you could get components that are most suitable. The problem at that level is that more you spend, the more you will need to spend. In order to have no weak links i...
Speakers for under $10k used?
What would you like the speaker to do? What kind of music do you predominantly listen to? What kind of equipment do you currently have. You have to get into specifics, or you will get total nonsense back.Rob
New vs Used when buying please share thoughts
My entire system, except for the rack, was constructed from Audiogon. When you can buy something at 45-60% less than retail with no tax, it is hard to argue with that. There is no doubt that there is risk involved. However, I would never have this...
Wadia 861 owners: Algorithm A,B, or C?
I am also interested in other's opinion on the sonic characteristics of the different algorithms. I listen to A, and on the 270 transport, there is a separate enhanced resolution mode which I usually leave off. I am not sure if the enhanced resolu...
Sistrum or Neuance or...?
This is a big can of worms. I asked the same question a while ago, and the whole subject of stands/platforms is enshrouded in the greatest audiophile mystique (which says alot). Perhaps it is the 'inner circle' of audiophilia. Also, beware, since ...
Avalon Eidolon Diamond vs WATT/Puppy 7
For classical music, let me also suggest putting the Thiel 7.2 on your list. And with all that extra money, you could send me some or use it to buy better electronics or cables. See my system for details.Rob
Anyone listen to WADIA 921 3-box DAC at CES 2004??
I haven't, and who knows when Wadia will release it (in terms of delays). However, I would be very interested in doing a direct comparison of my Wadia 27ix/270se with GNSC mods if anyone has the EMM Labs setup in the St. Louis area. We could repor...
ideal room size
Holzhauer,Great link. It never ceases to amaze me how audiophilia consistently redefines the term: "sky's the limit".Rob
Question to Hydra owners
This was somewhat addressed in a Soundstage review. My interpretation is that the difference between the new and old is subtle at best, and you would probably be best upgrading the powercord. The only downsize is that it a specialized powercord on...
Thiel speakers... one more try
I have Thiel's, love them, and recommend them under certain circumstances. I am not sure I would recommend them to you, though. I simply don't think electronically generated music sounds very good on them. Although they are capable of delivering c...
Tweeks for the Wadia 850
You might consider selling it and upgrading to a newer model... That's what I did. I figured that the resale value is still very reasonable, and you can probably get a very good deal on an 861se (or any other current Wadia player). It's not that t...
