Tube preamp recommendation ...
Roscoeii, thanks. I understand now. I do know he has buffers and he has preamps. I remember reading that his new generation preamp has gain. I don't know if his older preamps had gain or not. I do know I liked my friends original Dodd preamp in hi...
Tube preamp recommendation ...
Roscoeiii, I am confused about your use of the term “passive” in reference to the Dodd preamp. According to the sixmoons review, it has 2 tubes, an input impedance of 100k and output impedence of less than 200 ohms. What is passive?Bob
If you had $2000 to upgrade this system...
Sorry, I haven’t heard the Heed. I have compared it to the Minimax and the Ear. It was much superior. Just for fun I tried it today with my Dennon low output moving coil and was surprised that it worked. I guess the battery power helps keep the no...

With what you have, I would get a Dodd phono preamp. I think that would be the biggest change in sound that you could get for the money.Bob
Open Baffle loudspeakers.
One more advantage of open baffle speaker is that the image can be deeper and wider. One more disadvantage is that the added ambiance makes the image less clear and vocals less distinct. Proponents of open baffles say that the extra clarity is fro...
Open Baffle loudspeakers.
I have Salk SoundScapes that have an open baffle midrange. Box speakers don’t reproduce the liveliness that is often heard on the musical stage. Open baffle and panel speakers are attempt to solve the problem. The bass issue mentioned previously i...
Most forgiving high end speaker 10k-20k?
Making bad recordings sound good may not be all bad. In the case of open baffle speakers it is adding back the ambiance that is missing. Live music is usually listenable even though the artists aren’t great performers. A lot of that enjoyment is f...
Most forgiving high end speaker 10k-20k?
One of the Salk SoundScapes might fit the bill. They have an open baffle “bloom” that is fantastic for all types of music. It even makes mono Larwrence Welk shows great and I hate Larwrence Welk.Bob
Cartridge Recommendations
I just got a Denon DL-S1 this week and am blown away by the cartridge. I have been lusting after one of the Lyra cartridges but no more. This Denon easily blows out the AT OC9ii cartridges that I have had. My OC9 easily bested the Denon 103r. The ...
Can Anyone Recommend a Good Speaker ?
There is still not enough info to narrow down your choices. What size room? How many watts? What kind of music do you like? WAF?I will play along anyway.Philharmonic 2Bob
Speaker suggestions at around $30k
If I had $30k to spend, I would buy a Vandersteen 5a Carbon without question. I have only heard the Vandersteen 7 so use caution with my recommendation. I think the Carbon driver is the best driver that I have ever heard.Bob
Best of old model speakers under $1800 vs my Alons
Bob, waht speakers have you heard that these speakers compete with? I have been to three RMAF shows and the last one was in October. The Vandersteen 7s are better than the Philys, but the Philys might even be a little more transparent.Bob
Best of old model speakers under $1800 vs my Alons
I would recommend the Philharmonic 1s. They are only $1600 new. They are easily the best speaker under $10k that I have heard. If you can stretch to $2k then you can get them with a RAAL tweeter instead of the standard Fountek. A problem is that i...
Totem Arro vs Silverline Prelude vs Salk Songtower
There shouldn't be any problem with the Nova. I used a 100 watt digital amp in my 600 square foot room and it went louder than I would want. My 30 watt Fisher tube amp also powered it fine too.Bob
Totem Arro vs Silverline Prelude vs Salk Songtower
It is strange that you haven’t gotten any replies yet. I haven’t heard the Arro or the Prelude. The SongTower has one of the best 3D images that I have heard from conventional speakers. They have transmission line bass which works well close to th...
